#AndNEW: Ronda Rousey Wins SmackDown Women’s Championship at WrestleMania Backlash

Ronda Rousey Wins SmackDown Womens Championship

In the sole title match of WrestleMania Backlash, Ronda Rousey challenged Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. This “I Quit” Match was a rematch from their WrestleMania 38 encounter, where Flair successfully retained the championship. However, the “Rowdy” one wasn’t quite done with “The Queen,” which continued their feud. From a volatile contract signing to brawls, the two competitors took part in multiple encounters prior to WrestleMania Backlash. Despite coming up short in their previous match, Ronda Rousey emerged victorious in this rematch by winning the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

The match approached its conclusion when Charlotte Flair had Ronda Rousey down to the mat. “Happy Mother’s Day, bitch,” said Flair, who was quickly taken by surprise with an armbar by Rousey, the steel chair in the ring being used to support the move. Flair refused to quit, to which Rousey responded, saying that she hoped she’d say that. From there, Rousey applied more torque on the hold. Without anywhere to go, Flair verbally submitted, resulting in Rousey being crowned the new SmackDown Women’s Champion.

What to Know Following Title Change at WrestleMania Backlash

This WrestleMania Backlash victory marks Ronda Rousey’s first SmackDown Women’s Championship reign. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship star was previously Raw Women’s Champion, having held the title in question from August 2018, winning it from Alexa Bliss at Summerslam, to April 2019, losing it to Becky Lynch in a Triple Threat Match, also featuring Charlotte Flair, at WrestleMania 35. During her 231-day title reign, Rousey successfully defended the gold against such names as Natalya, Nikki Bella, Bayley, Sasha Banks, and Mickie James. Furthermore, Rousey is a Women’s Royal Rumble winner, having won the match in question this past January.
