MJF should undoubtedly be the first person in All Elite Wrestling to defeat CM Punk.
Ever since arriving on the All Elite scene in August, Punk has clocked in a fair amount of matches. Some of those bouts, such as the one with Eddie Kingston at Full Gear, have been fantastic displays of all of Punk’s skills. But there have definitely been some low-lights, as Punk being regulated to an eleven-minute television match with QT Marshall on the recent Thanksgiving edition of AEW Dynamite.
Punk seems to be in the midst of a feud that has all the workings of being one of his best ever — and it hasn’t even hosted an actual match yet. MJF and “Pepsi Phil” have been trading verbal jabs for weeks now and had one of the longest and widely praised promo segments in company history.
But again, let’s be honest; this is the perfect opportunity to send MJF into the stratosphere, and there’s absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t be the first person in the promotion to defeat CM Punk.
There are several positives that could come out of this, specifically surrounding the AEW World Championship. Punk has many quality wins over people with winning records (Bobby Fish, Matt Sydal, Eddie Kingston, and Darby Allin) and should be in line for a title shot soon. If MJF were to beat him, that would hold over for his “due” title shot for a bit longer — which is necessary at this point in his run.
It would also propel MJF to undoubtedly be the number one contender to that title, something he’s been mentioning for a few weeks. Personally, I’m of the belief that MJF should be the one to dethrone “Hangman” Adam Page in the first quarter of 2022. If MJF were to do that, his feud with Punk could stretch out over the entire year of 2022 and most likely produce some quality pay-per-view matches.
Punk isn’t somebody that needs the AEW title to stay relevant and prominent but will still probably get a run with it at some point simply due to the star power he brings. Although that time will come, it shouldn’t be at the expense of Hangman or MJF — two of the people that will carry the company for years to come.
All in all, there isn’t much benefit to Punk defeating MJF in any capacity of any match. MJF has much more to gain than Punk, who is one of the most “bulletproof” characters in professional wrestling.
