PWG 2022 Battle of Los Angeles

Following the company’s It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll) event earlier this month, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla made another big announcement via Twitter. PWG confirmed that it will be holding its long-standing tournament, the Battle of Los Angeles. Also known as BOLA, this tournament has featured many notable wrestlers throughout the years, some of whom currently compete on television in major organizations. PWG confirmed that the 2022 Battle of Los Angeles will take place on January 29 and 30. No further details have been shared as of this writing.

2022 Battle of Los Angeles – What to Know

The Format of the Tournament

The Battle of Los Angeles is a multi-day tournament whose format has changed throughout the years. Case and point, the inaugural tournament in 2005 featured 16 wrestlers, as well as 8 opening round matches, 4 quarterfinals, 2 semifinals, and 1 final bout. From there, the tournament saw many changes, not only in terms of the number of competitors involved but the number of matches set and even days the tournament was held across.

Notable Competitors and Winners

As mentioned earlier, the Battle of Los Angeles featured many competitors, some of whom may be more notable than others. BOLA winners over the years include, but aren’t limited to, Davey Richards, Jeff Cobb, Kyle O’Reilly, Adam Cole, and Kenny Omega. The most recent BOLA, held in 2019, saw Bandido as the winner.

This isn’t to say that other competitors haven’t gone the distance. Despite not winning the tournament in question, names such as Chris Hero, Kevin Steen, and AJ Styles have gone the distance, only to fall in their respective final matches. In 2019, former Ring of Honor Pure Champion Jonathan Gresham was one of the runner-up competitors.
