Match Point: Dr. Britt Baker DMD vs. Tay Conti for the AEW Women’s World Championship at AEW Full Gear

Dr. Britt Baker DMD vs. Tay Conti

Match Point is an ongoing series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. This edition looks at Dr. Britt Baker DMD putting her AEW Women’s World Championship on the line against Tay Conti at Full Gear 2021

Tonight is the night! Dr. Britt Baker DMD defends her AEW Women’s World Championship against a Brazilian professional wrestler this week touted by Tony Khan as being one of the – if not the – most improved wrestlers on the planet in the form Tay Conti. Tay has worked hard to get to this moment. Just last year, alongside a roster full of talented wrestlers which included another big AEW name in Miro, Conti was a victim of WWE’s talent cuts – largely believed to be a direct result of COVID-19. Despite at the time being one of the lesser known talents among the releases, she has largely established herself within AEW as a highly talented professional wrestler with heavy amounts of untapped potential. At AEW: Full Gear tonight, she has the opportunity to realize some of that potential.

Dr. Britt Baker DMD vs. Tay Conti for the AEW Women’s World Championship

Tay Conti has her work cut out for her. In the opposite corner is the reigning, defending, resident dentist AEW Women’s World Champion Dr. Britt Baker DMD. During All Elite Wrestling‘s short existence, Britt has risen to the highest of highs to establish herself as one of the biggest names in the company. When you consider that – outside of a jobber appearance – Britt has achieved this without any former WWE or NJPW clout, this is very impressive. Despite not being the best technician or the most exciting performer in the ring, her big matches usually deliver; with her natural connection with the audience (even more impressive given that she is a heel) and the investment in her matches making her stand out as one of the top attractions in the company.

Whilst Tay Conti does not have this same investment (yet), a big win tonight might change that. Let it be clear: Tay Conti has all the tools to be a top babyface star within AEW. She has fan support; a terrific look; athleticism in abundance and is quickly honing her craft to become one of the better wrestlers in a very talented AEW women’s division. Should she continue on this upward trajectory, all of that aforementioned untapped potential might easily be realized; with Conti becoming one of the biggest stars in the company. Of course, this is all prediction.

At tonight’s AEW: Full Gear, she is unlikely to overcome the obstacles standing in her way – with Reba (not Rebel) and Jamie Hayter providing Britt with a clear numbers advantage over the Brazilian. With Conti’s close friend, Thunder Rosa, widely touted as the one to overcome long-time rival Britt Baker in the future, this might not be Conti’s time. However, tonight is about more than just title opportunities; it is a star-making opportunity – one which will allow Tay Conti to announce herself to the AEW audience as more than just a potential star, but an “already here” talent capable of hanging with the big guns. She might just do that tonight. Tune in to AEW: Full Gear to catch Tay Conti challenge Britt Baker for the AEW Women’s World Championship. It should be a treat.
