The 25-year-old Detroit native, Leon Ruffin, began his professional wrestling career in the summer of 2017. He adopted the ring name “Leon Ruff” in honor of his grandfather, named Leon Ruffin. He started working at World Wrestling Alliance 4, where he was trained, before working his way across the independent scene. Promotions he worked for include, but aren’t limited to, Pro South Wrestling and Full Impact Pro. On June 23, 2018, Ruffin debuted for EVOLVE Wrestling, which was the first major indie organization where he appeared. He routinely teamed with AR Fox, who was instrumental in Ruffin’s development, even winning the EVOLVE Tag Team Championship in July of 2019. Later that December, Ruffin made his first NXT appearance, teaming with Adrian Alanis in a loss against Wesley Blake and Steve Cutler of The Forgotten Sons. By October of 2020, Ruffin would sign with the company on a full-time basis.

Ruffin saw modest success on the black-and-gold brand as a contracted WWE talent. One month after his signing, he shocked the wrestling world by defeating Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship, his first singles title in his young career. Ruffin would lose the title in a triple threat match, featuring Gargano and Damian Priest, at NXT TakeOver: WarGames IV this past December. In January of this year, Ruffin teamed with Kushida for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. They defeated Gargano and Austin Theory of The Way in their first-round match, only to lose to Grizzled Young Veterans in the quarterfinals. From there, Ruffin entered a brief feud with Isaiah “Swerve” Scott before ultimately being released from WWE this past August alongside Mercedes Martinez, Bronson Reed, and a number of other talents.
