Josh Woods was announced as the number one contender on the August 10 episode of ROH Week by Week. Ten days later, at Glory by Honor, Jonathan Gresham successfully defended the title against Rhett Titus. This set up the match between Woods and Gresham tonight, where Woods captured the ROH Pure title. Both men had rope breaks subtracted for not answering the referee’s five-count while within the ropes.
After the second rope break was taken from both men, they swapped quick pin attempts before a double three count was counted. Gresham demanded the match be restarted, which it was. The third rope break was taken from both men shortly after the restart. Woods won the match after tossing Gresham over his shoulders with Gresham landing hard on the mat. Woods pinned Gresham to win the ROH Pure title.
Woods scored two major victories against former mentor Silas Young to help secure his shot at the title. He defeated Young in a Pure Rules match at ROH TV #507 before beating him in a Last Man Standing Match at Best in the World. Woods was also on the winning side of the Champions vs. All Stars 10-man tag team match at ROH TV #517.
Gresham won the Pure Title by winning the Pure Rules Tournament last year. He defeated Woods in the semifinals of the tournament before besting Tracy Williams in the finals to capture the title. Gresham defended the title against Flip Gordon, Joe Keys, Dak Draper, Jay Lethal, and Mike Bennett will holding the title.
