Hell in a Cell Match Set to Take Place on Friday Night SmackDown

Hell in a Cell Rey Mysterio Roman Reigns

In a shocking announcement, a match that was scheduled for WWE Hell in a Cell this Sunday will now take place on Friday Night SmackDown. On Friday night, within the confines of Hell in a Cell, Roman Reigns will defend the Universal Championship against Rey Mysterio. To say that this took fans by surprise would be an understatement, especially given its significance. For many viewers, this was the most anticipated match on Sunday. Now, on free television, it will take place two nights early.

World Wrestling Entertainment made the announcement following social media activity between Rey Mysterio and Roman Reigns. Mysterio expressed that he couldn’t wait any longer to face Reigns and that he wanted to settle matters on SmackDown. Reigns responded in a nonchalant manner. “Sunday. Friday. Any day,” said Reigns. “Makes no difference to me.” Reigns also assured that his Special Counsel, Paul Heyman, would handle the paperwork before the show.

The feud between Roman Reigns and Rey Mysterio sparked following the former’s attacks on the Mysterio clan. Not only did the elder Rey find himself at the receiving end of multiple attacks, but his son Dominik Mysterio received the true brunt of the assault, most recently being powerbombed from the ring to the outside. In an effort to defend his family, as well as win his first Universal title, Rey Mysterio will challenge Roman Reigns in a Hell in a Cell match tomorrow night.

This upcoming Hell in a Cell match is historic for many reasons. First, this will be the first-ever Hell in a Cell contest on SmackDown programming. Second, it marks the first non-pay-per-view Hell in a Cell match since 1998, the last taking place on the August 24, 1998 episode of Monday Night Raw pitting Kane against Mankind.
