Suwama announced that All Japan Pro Wrestling is accepting applicants for Evolution Girls which will become the promotion’s women’s division. Rumours first began months ago that AJPW were looking into starting a women’s division and we now have confirmation that they will be training women to make up their own division, following Pro Wrestling ZeroOne who are doing the same in 2021 with Megumi Kudo and Aja Kong leading that project.
Suwama has already announced that he will be at the December 12th Ice Ribbon event and he has something to say to former Joshi Grand Prix award winner Tsukasa Fujimoto. This has led to speculation that Ice Ribbon or Fujimoto will be involved with Evolution Girls in some way. It would be smart to get Fujimoto to train the women as the historical precedent in Joshi is that women train other women, and that has always kept Joshi unique and special.
With Stardom on the road to a boom and a number of companies setting up women’s division the world of Joshi continues to expand, are we headed for a new period of success for Joshi wrestling or will the market become oversaturated? The question remains how this division will benefit AJPW which most observers can agree has needed some injection of excitement, whether Evolution Girls can provide that or not remains to be seen.
