Per The Hollywood Reporter, it has been confirmed that John Cena will star in the upcoming Peacemarker series on HBO Max. This series will serve as a prequel to The Suicide Squad, the James-Gunn directed film set to release in August of 2021. However, instead of the show focusing on various members of squad in question, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the spotlight will be set squarely on Cena. He will portray Peacemaker, the alterego of Christopher Smith. Peacemaker will be an eight-episode series, exclusive to HBO Max, with filming to begin next year.
Outside of the aforementioned series, John Cena will make his silver screen debut, as Peacemaker, in next year’s Suicide Squad film. The character in question has been described as a douchey version of Marvel’s Captain America. Essentially, he aims to uphold justice to an extreme, even if it means innocent people are hurt or killed in the process. In the Peacemaker comic book series, which debuted in 1966, it was established that his methods were the result of his upbringing. From being burdened by the spirits of people he killed to the influence of his death camp commandant father, Peacemaker’s character is incredibly layered.
According to James Gunn, the role of Peacemaker will also serve as a reflection of society. Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter, “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.” Simply put, this will be more than a role in a fantasy film. Gunn aims to make the role so much more. Keep in mind that Gunn previously directed The Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, both of which were well-received by audiences.
Since distancing himself from the world of professional wrestling, Cena has been active in various film roles. Among the most prominent have been Bumblebee, released in 2018, and Dolittle, which hit theaters the year after. Despite such notable efforts, Cena’s work in The Suicide Squad and the accompanying spinoff series may be his biggest to date. Superhero films have been incredibly popular for years, whether from DC or otherwise. If said film and series perform well, expect to see Cena become a greater presence in the DC cinematic universe.
