Any Given Sunday events have, in recent years, come to be known as the first major event of the new year for Smash Wrestling. Last year, we saw Vanessa Kraven interfere in a World title match that saw Frankie TM defeat Tyson Dux, and we saw the first ever Smash Tag Team Champions crowned, as the Well Oiled Machines defeated Tabernak De Team in what was an early Match of The Year Candidate.
This year, Any Given Sunday is the seventh installment of the event, which in previous years has seen AJ Styles, Johnny Gargano, Chris Hero, Matt Cross, Candice LeRae, and many more notable names compete. Any Given Sunday 7 will be taped for the Fight Network and will be broadcast over the coming weeks.
Puf vs. John Greed
At In Your Dreams on December 16, Puf was the victim of a John Greed blindside attack. At Any Given Sunday, he has been given the chance to get a measure of revenge. On the other side, John Greed is fresh off a loss in a Smash World title opportunity and is looking to get back on the winning track.
Fight or Flight (Gabriel Fuerza & Vaughn Vertigo) vs. KILL/SCREEN (Shane Sabre & Mark Wheeler) vs. Well Oiled Machines (Pepper Parks & Mike Rollins)
Last year, the Well Oiled Machines were fighting to be crowned the first ever Smash Wrestling Tag Team Champions. This year, they are fighting to get back into the title hunt picture. Their path to another shot at the tag team titles sees them in this triple threat match versus the returning Fight or Flight and the Scotty O’Shea followers Kill/Screen, who are both fighting to get their own names into the tag title picture.
Matt Cross vs. Facade vs. Rey Horus
Rey Horus makes his Smash wrestling debut in this match and has a tall order in front of him if he wants to be victorious. Standing across from him in the ring will be non-other than former Smash Wrestling champion Matt Cross and another Smash Wrestling veteran in Facade. In can be predicted with almost certainty that this match will be a fast-paced, hard-hitting affair, as all three of the competitors hold nothing back in their attempts to become victorious.
Smash Tag Team Championship: The Pillars (Tyson Dux & Brent Banks) (c) vs. Halal Beefcake (Idris Abraham & Joe Coleman)
The Pillars look to keep their hot streak from 2018 rolling. They will have to get through the duo of Joe Coleman and Idris Abraham first, as they face Halal Beefcake in their first Tag Title defense of 2019. Halal Beefcake recently aligned themselves with Kevin Bennett to form the new Kevin Bennett Experience. At Heavy is The Head in Kitchener, we saw all four combatants in singles competition against each other but at Any Given Sunday only one pinfall will matter, and the winner will be champions.
Sebastian Suave vs. Jay Freddie
Originally this was to be the fourth match in a best of five between Sebastian Suave and Daniel Garcia. Suave was leading the series two matches to one, but now due to a bad car accident, Garcia is unable to wrestle. Garcia has personally picked US indie veteran Jay Freddie to replace him in the match, which will also be Freddie’s Smash debut. He will need to topple one of the Pillars if he expects to leave Any Given Sunday victorious. Suave, on the other hand, has seen his stock soar in recent months in Ontario and Quebec, winning gold in both provinces.
Smash Championship: Tarik (c) vs. Carter Mason
Fresh off his title defense in Kitchener against John Greed and Matt Cross, Tarik finds himself having to immediately refocus on a surging Carter Mason as his next challenger. Mason finds himself with a title opportunity as a type of reward from Smash management. Mason filled at the last moment on several events and as such has earned the shot at Tarik, previously belonging to Kevin Bennett. Due to the Buffalo Brothers’ car accident, Bennett had to withdraw and now Mason doesn’t want to waste his biggest opportunity in Smash Wrestling to date.
Barbed Wire Hell: Scotty O’Shea vs. Jimmy Havoc
Kevin Blackwood was also injured in the same car accident as Daniel Garcia and Kevin Bennett and was forced to remove himself from this match. At Heavy is The Head, Scotty O’Shea received a little package from Smash Management. The package contained a hatchet and soon after, we learned that none other than Jimmy Havoc was replacing the injured Blackwood and stepping into the ring to face O’Shea. What is Barbed Wire Hell you may ask? Well, it involves two sides of the ring and various weapons being wrapped in barbed wire. This is a match that falls right into Havoc’s wheelhouse. The previous CZW Tournament of Death winner will feel right at home in Barbed Wire Hell and O’Shea should be very worried.
Any Given Sunday 7 takes place at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 27th. First bell is at 3 pm.
