Since being picked number one overall out of Auburn in 2011, Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has one opponent that tends to give him the most trouble: Pete Carroll‘s Seattle Seahawks. From 2011-2018, in the years of both Newton with the Carolina Panthers and Wilson being on their respective teams, the Seahawks have held a 5-2 record. Upon meeting in the postseason, it seems a bit more balanced.
In 2014, the Seahawks were on their way to a potential Super Bowl repeat and eliminated Newton and the Panthers in the divisional round en route to a Super Bowl loss to Newton’s current team in New England. 2015 was Newton’s turn to have a victory cigar as the Panthers raced out to a 31-0 lead in the divisional round before escaping with a 31-24 victory.
Carolina made it to the Super Bowl where they fell 24-10 to the Denver Broncos in Peyton Manning‘s final game of a storied career. Last season the Panthers lost at home to Seattle 30-24, with Newton on the bench in favor of Kyle Allen. Since then, Newton was released and Wilson took his team to the divisional round of the playoffs, where they came up yards short against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
2020: Cam Newton Has Joined With the Patriots
This year, Cam will once again face the Seahawks in Seattle. This time, however, he brings forth a new arsenal and a new coach, who is regarded among league circles as the greatest of all time. Bill Belichick’s team is coming off a win over the Miami Dolphins, in which Newton went 15/19 for 155 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
With players such as former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman and running back James White at his disposal, expect Newton to have a productive day. In addition, the Patriots defense record three interceptions and are once again continuing their ways of taking the ball away. If they hold up their end of the bargain along with Newton, his personal rival could end up leaving their empty nest with a loss.
