Tom Coughlin‘s time in Jacksonville is done. He is being fired by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan effective immediately. This news breaks just days after the release of an NFLPA case involving the Jaguars. The NFLPA sent a letter to the league’s players revealing that over 25 percent of grievances by players have been against the Jaguars. Though not spelled out by the NFLPA, many have surmised that Coughlin was the reason for unrest in Duval.

Tom Coughlin Fired From Jacksonville Jaguars
Tom Coughlin was the Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Jaguars. This was his second stint with the team. Coughlin was the first head coach for the Jaguars. As you can read in the statement from Khan above, he intended to relieve Coughlin of his duties at the end of the season. That has now obviously changed.
It is high time that Khan address the issues with the Jaguars organization. There was already speculation that Coughlin could be gone along with Genral Manager Dave Caldwell and Head Coach Doug Marrone at the end of the season. However, when an issue so pervasive and egregious arises, it must be dealt with. Coughlin has long been known as a strict disciplinarian. But the NFLPA ruled against the the team for fining players for missing medical appointments in the offseason and various other issues.
Khan’s statement also denotes that Caldwell and Marrone will both report directly to Khan on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. This is a rare statement from the owner. Khan generally relies on his subordinates and trusts their judgment. Now with two games left in the season, he’s taking more control.
Coughlin is a very accomplished coach. He had success with the Jaguars early on. He then went on to win two Super Bowls with the New York Giants. But his second stint with Jacksonville ends on a sour note.
