Dallas Cowboys Sign Quarterback Mark Sanchez
Sanchez was released by the Broncos after he lost the starting job competition to Trevor Siemian. He is expected to back up rookie quarterback Dak Prescott in Dallas.
Sanchez was drafted by the New York Jets out of the University of Southern California (USC) in 2009 NFL Draft. He led the Jets to two consecutive AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010. They lost both games.
After an infamous fumble against the New England Patriots on Thanksgiving night 2011, his play has declined. Sanchez joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014. He took over a 6-2 team after quarterback Nick Foles broke his collarbone. The Eagles would lose four of their final eight games and missed the playoffs.
The Broncos are coming off of a victory in Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers. After the game, quarterback Peyton Manning retired. This meant that the Broncos needed to find a quarterback to replace him. Quarterback Brock Osweiler, who took over the team for a short while, signed with the Houston Texans in free agency.
The Broncos signed Sanchez in hopes that he could lead the team. They also drafted quarterback Paxton Lynch with the 31st overall pick in April’s draft. The competition was between these two and Siemian. Siemian won, and Lynch was named the backup quarterback.
As for the Cowboys, they will be without quarterback Tony Romo for the first six to ten weeks of the season as he fractured a bone in his spine in a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. This means Prescott, who the Cowboys drafted with the 135th overall pick, will start. Dallas is hoping Sanchez will serve as a good backup.
