The NFL week seven injury report saw some vital players leave their game due to injuries, while the status of other players still nursing injuries look to get back on the field as soon as week eight. Some of the more notable injuries in week seven include Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman and Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy. Below is list of the week seven injuries, as well as the status of recent injuries prior to week seven.
NFL Week Seven Injury Update
Cleveland Browns – Cody Kessler
The Cleveland Browns have seen six different players take snaps under center during the 2016 season. They have now added rookie Kevin Hogan, a seventh quarterback to that growing list.
Kessler remains in the NFL Concussion Protocol, head coach Hue Jackson told reporters on Monday. The Browns rookie quarterback suffered a concussion in Cleveland’s 31-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Jackson said that Josh McCown has been practicing, but didn’t commit to the veteran until he sees more out of him in practice this week before they take on the New York Jets.
New York Jets – Geno Smith
On Monday the New York Jets announced that quarterback Geno Smith underwent an MRI which showed that he, in fact, tore his ACL, and will miss the rest of the season.
ESPN reports that Smith does plan on getting a second opinion.
Smith, 26, is in the fourth and final year of his rookie contract with the Jets. New York has seemed more than ready to move on from the quarterback ever since a locker room altercation back in 2015 when Smith had his jaw broken from one of his own teammates.
Smith left Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens in the second quarter after taking a sack from Baltimore’s linebacker Matt Judon.
Houston Texans – Derek Newton
The Houston Texans fear that right tackle Derek Newton suffered a torn patella in both his knees before he was carted off the field in the first quarter of the Texans-Broncos game on Monday Night’s 27-9 loss to the Denver Broncos. Tackle Chris Clark replaced Newton, while the Texans will have further information regarding the status of Derek Newton in the coming days.
Washington Redskins – Josh Norman and Trent Williams
The Washington Redskins lost two of their best players in a heartbreaking defeat to the Detroit Lions, 20-17 on Sunday at Ford’s Field. Cornerback Josh Norman and left tackle Trent Williams both had to leave the game with injuries in the second half.
Norman suffered a concussion in the third quarter on a 52-yard pass play that he allowed to the Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. , the receivers first catch of the game. Norman remained on the ground for a period of time, in obvious discomfort, before slowly walking toward the locker room.
Norman’s status for next week against the Cincinnati Bengals is still unclear for the moment.
Trent Williams went down on the second-to-last play of the game. He apparently suffered a left knee sprain on Washington’s last attempt to tie the score. Williams needed help while walking off the field, and had a noticeable limp in the locker room after the game. Williams admitted he was in pain, but couldn’t tell how significant the injury will be. The Redskins will know more about Williams injury after he undergoes an MRI on Monday.
Atlanta Falcons – Tevin Coleman
Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said he would know more about Tevin Coleman‘s hamstring strain during the next couple of days, but the Falcons head coach did sound prepared to make a roster move just in case the running back is sidelined for an extended period of time.
A source told ESPN‘s Adam Schefter that Coleman who aggravated his hamstring against the San Diego Chargers is unlikely to play against the Green Bay Packers.
Head coach Dan Quinn indicated that the team would likely look internally for help at running back, with starter Devonta Freeman the only back on the active roster. Terron Ward is on the practice squad.
Last year Ward played in 13 games and rushed for 95 yards and one touchdown.
Buffalo Bills – LeSean McCoy
Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy ran the ball eight times for just eleven yards before exiting the game with a hamstring injury. After the game against the Miami Dolphins, McCoy told reporters he felt “amazing” during the pregame warmups, but felt pain once he had a few touches. McCoy will likely be a question mark against the New England Patriots if his hamstring continues to be an issue.
Even if McCoy can make it a go, look for Mike Gillislee to help carry the load against the Patriots.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Doug Martin
When Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Charles Sims was placed on Injured Reserve, it allowed for running back Doug Martin to finish the season as their lone back. But then Martin suffered his own setback during practice, and head coach Dirk Koetter admitted that he doesn’t know how long it will take for Martin to return.
Jacquizz Rodgers has done a great job filling in for Doug Martin and Charles Sims while they’ve been out, rushing for over 100 yards in back-to-back games. Even Peyton Barber had 84 yards and a touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers. If both Rodgers and Barber can continue to produce, it could allow the Bucs to rest Martin a little longer.
Detroit Lions – Theo Riddick
Theo Riddick of the Detroit Lions has missed the last two games, and hasn’t been able to get on the practice field. The Lions could really use Riddick considering he’s their biggest threat out of the backfield. In order for Riddick to play this Sunday against the Houston Texans, he needs to get on the practice field.
If Riddick is unable to make it back on the field, look for the recently acquired Justin Forsett, as well as Zach Zenner to continue to get the carries. Renner saw the most carries in week six while scoring a touchdown. Forsett saw his role increase in week seven with ten touches for 48 total yards.
