New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been involved in recent controversy stemming from a domestic incident last month. The 13-year veteran was accused by a woman of battery on video in an incident that occurred at Smith’s residence in Davie, Florida, on June 21, which resulted in officers arriving on the scene. At the time, Smith wasn’t arrested or brought into custody after the authorities arrived.
Since the incident, neither the Jets quarterback nor the team has publicly responded to the allegations. Now, nearly a month since the incident, the Davie, Florida, police department announced the investigation into the alleged battery incident is inactive. Within the supplemental case report, the department concluded that no additional steps can be reasonably continued with the information currently provided. Since the incident, neither the Jets quarterback nor the woman has provided the police with a follow-up statement.
With the investigation inactive, it bodes well for the Jets projected week one starting quarterback‘s chances to start the season vs. the Tennessee Titans on September 13th. It is important to note, though, that the Jets quarterback isn’t out of the woods yet. Despite the case being inactive, Smith could still be in trouble should the NFL deem he violated the league’s personal conduct policy. But as of now, he is still on track to lead the New York Jets offense this fall. Between Smith’s last season with the Las Vegas Raiders and the Jets 2025 struggles to pass the ball, both need a strong season from the other.

On June 21st, Davie, Florida, police responded to a 911 call made by a woman at the residence of Jets quarterback Geno Smith. The woman alleged she was Smith’s ex-girlfriend. She posted a video on Instagram repeating that Smith had run outside his home and attacked her. While there were scratches on both Smith’s face and a bruise on the woman’s left arm, no one on the scene was arrested or taken into custody. After reports that the investigation was closed, the Davie, Florida, police department refuted it, stating that the investigation was still ongoing.
Three weeks after the incident, little updates were shared. On Tuesday, July 14th, the police released the supplemental case report. From the information gathered from the initial case report, no additional information was provided to conclude further investigation. Within the supplemental case report, both Smith and the woman did not provide the police with the requested follow-up statements. With only the information to go by from the initial incident report, the department deemed it insufficient to continue with no aggressor identified.
Geno Smith is a different player from his first time as the Jets quarterback
After 10 years away, quarterback Geno Smith returns to the team that gave him his first shot in the NFL. The 35-year-old veteran was acquired by the New York Jets in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders this March. In return, New York sent the Raiders a 2026 sixth-round pick. In addition to the quarterback, the Jets also acquired the Raiders 2026 seventh-round pick in the trade. While Smith’s regression as a starter was apparent after leading the league in interceptions last season, this is still a better version of the man New York once moved on from in 2017.

The last time he was on the team, Geno Smith was a 26-year-old backup quarterback behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. One week after reclaiming the starting job, Smith tore his ACL in his first start of the season vs. the Baltimore Ravens in late October. After spending three seasons as a backup between the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers, a six-year tenure in Seattle that revitalized his career. Succeeding Seattle Seahawks star Russell Wilson, Smith thrived as Seattle’s starting quarterback, throwing 12,961 yards with 76 touchdowns to only 36 interceptions. During the 2022 season, Smith led the league in completion percentage and won Comeback Player of the Year.
However, it didn’t lead Seattle to much playoff success after losing the only playoff appearance with Smith starting in a 41-23 blowout against the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. In 2025, the Seahawks and Smith ended their tenure after the Seahawks sent the quarterback to the Raiders for a 2025 third-round pick. Shortly after being acquired, Smith and the Raiders agreed to a two-year, $75 million contract extension. Unfortunately, the Raiders finished 2-13 with Geno as the starter, while Smith threw for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns, and a league-leading 17 interceptions.
After securing the first overall pick and moving on from head coach Pete Carroll, Smith’s tenure in Las Vegas was on borrowed time. With Heisman-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza of the National Champion Indiana Hoosiers declaring for the draft, it was only a matter of waiting until he became the Raiders star quarterback during the NFL Draft. With Smith in need of a new opportunity, he’s taking a trip down memory lane to help lead the Jets offense this year.
Both New York and Smith need the Jets quarterback to succeed this season
For both Smith and New York, a lot is riding on this season. Geno Smith is facing a crossroads in his career. After working hard in Seattle to prove he can be a starting quarterback, Smith needs to show that last season in Las Vegas was an outlier instead of the new normal. While Smith led the NFL in interceptions, the Raiders’ offensive line also struggled, as the quarterback was the most sacked in the league. Ideally, head coach Aaron Glenn hopes the new situation can help Smith bounce back. Especially with the ex-Jets cornerback turned coach’s job likely on the line.
After the Jets finished 3-14, Glenn is on thin ice entering 2026. However, general manager Darren Mougey has managed to significantly upgrade the team on paper. Between cap space and four top-50 draft picks, New York added 11 potential starters across the offense and defense. The new Jets quarterback enters training camp with a guaranteed starting job for a young but potential-filled offense.

Smith has a strong offensive foundation in New York
His receiving options are highlighted by the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Garrett Wilson. The 25-year-old wide receiver is excited to prove himself after an injury-filled 2025. Wilson aspires to return to the 1,000-yard season production he showed before his knee injury robbed his 2025 season. Along with Wilson, Smith will also have third-year wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, with whom the quarterback has created early chemistry during the ex-Colts second-round pick’s strong offseason.
Along with two first-round picks in wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. and tight end Kenyon Sadiq. Not to mention veteran running back Breece Hall, who became the eighth running back in team history with a 1,000-yard rushing season. In addition, second-year tight end Mason Taylor, who led the team in catches last season with 44 catches for 369 yards. Along with an underrated offensive line that features two first-round picks at offensive tackle in Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou. To help ease his transition, New York signed veteran guard Dylan Parham, who was the Raiders left guard when Smith started in Las Vegas last year.
As Geno Smith looks to rebound after a rough 2025 season, the tools are there in New York for him to capitalize on. A veteran offensive coordinator with head coach experience, a better offensive line, and multiple young playmakers to throw to. But it’s on the Jets quarterback to make the most of this opportunity to maintain his status as a starting quarterback heading into 2027.
