Stefon Diggs – Not Brandon Aiyuk – Projected to Sign With Commanders

Stefon Diggs is arguably the best free agent wide receiver remaining, and it’s hard to understand why the big-name pass-catcher has yet to find a new home. A former fifth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Maryland product immediately outplayed his draft capital and established himself as one of the league’s top wide receivers. Originally making a name for himself with the Minnesota Vikings, Diggs led the league in receptions (127) and yards (1,535) during his first season with the Buffalo Bills back in 2020. While he has dropped off a bit since those days, the 2025 season proved he can still be a reliable weapon.

Starting and appearing in all 17 games, Stefon Diggs was Drake Maye’s top weapon and finished the season with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns. With his help, New England made it to the Super Bowl and Maye finished second in the MVP voting. Despite this, New England released Diggs following the season, but he still can play. In a recent article, Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton made his case for why the Washington Commanders should pursue the star wide receiver.

“Brandon Aiyuk has released a series of videos on social media, lambasting his current team, the San Francisco 49ers, and pushing to be associated with the Commanders,” Moton writes. “Washington should look elsewhere for receiver help – someone who’s a free agent and has been on the field over the last year.”

Commanders Urged to Sign Stefon Diggs, Not Brandon Aiyuk

There is no denying the Washington Commanders could use another wide receiver. Terry McLaurin is still a good player, but he showed signs of slowing down last year and cannot do it all by himself at this stage in his career. While Deebo Samuel is still a free agent, the Commanders probably would have re-signed him by now if they believed he could be a key part of the team. Perhaps rookie Antonio Williams can make an immediate impact, but Washington shouldn’t put all their eggs in his basket. This team needs a proven weapon, and Stefon Diggs is a better option than Brandon Aiyuk.

While Aiyuk is younger, the former first-round pick has not played a game since the 2024 season. He didn’t look particularly great in that truncated season either, as he recorded just 25 receptions for 374 yards and no touchdowns in seven games before suffering a season-ending injury. While he earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2023, he hasn’t done anything in the past two seasons to inspire any type of confidence, both on and off the field.

The Commanders will not trade for Brandon Aiyuk, but some believe they could sign him once the 49ers inevitably release him. However, they’re better off going after Stefon Diggs. Now only is Diggs available now, but he has a stronger track record of success and is less of an off-field liability.
