Steelers Training Camp Preview 2026: Expectations for Mike McCarthy in Year 1

Ahead of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp, head coach Mike McCarthy knows he has a lot of expectations from the fanbase. It was made very clear at McCarthy’s opening press conference that the Steelers won’t be rebuilding or even retooling the roster this year; the organization is all in on winning.

In hiring McCarthy over younger, less proven candidates, Rooney emphasized his desire to win now with the league’s third-oldest active head coach (behind Kansas City’s Andy Reid and New York Giants’ John Harbaugh),” ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor wrote in January after McCarthy was named the head coach.

With approximately six weeks to go until the players move into the dorms at Saint Vincent College, it’s time to break down the expectations for McCarthy and how he can surpass them in his first year coaching his hometown team.

What are the Expectations for Mike McCarthy in Year 1?

1. A Top Offense

The former Dallas Cowboys coach knows how to have a successful offense even in today’s day and age.

s NFL. Unlike his predecessor, McCarthy knew how to evolve and change with the game. He wasn’t playing catch-up or trying to win in 2025 the same way he won in 2005. He has had two elite quarterbacks in his career, despite Dak Prescott having his leadership skills questioned recently..

In his time between Dallas and Green Bay, McCarthy consistently had a premier offense. Through his 18 years as an NFL head coach, he has finished the season with a Top 10 scoring offense 12 times, with 10 of those seasons finishing in the Top 5.

Pittsburgh should expect much of the same from him this season with an elite group of wide receivers. Veterans D.K. Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. are the main pass catchers for Aaron Rodgers, but teams won’t be able to sleep on rookie receiver Germie Bernard, who turned some heads in OTAs.

2. Strong Clock Management Skills

Every player and coach will tell you that games are won and lost in the final two minutes of each half, but they never really get into the details as to why that occurs. Some of it comes down to clock management, which is an area the Steelers have often struggled in the past. By having a breath of fresh air at the helm with McCarthy, it’s an opportunity for the organization to turn the page.

Like every team, Pittsburgh will practice a variety of clock-management scenarios when Steelers training camp begins in a few weeks. However, McCarthy also needs to know when he can bend the rules a little, as former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick did with his infamous time-wasting scheme through penalties. That loophole has since been closed, but the window is there for McCarthy to find new ones.

3. Winning a Playoff Game

This is the biggest expectation that Steelers fans have for McCarthy, as the organization hasn’t won a playoff game since January 2017. It’s hard to believe a franchise as historic as the Steelers has gone almost a decade without a playoff victory. However, the team only has itself to blame for being in this situation.

McCarthy is trying to get his first playoff win since January 2023, a game where he was the last coach to eliminate future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the playoffs. If the organization is going to win a playoff game any time soon, this season is arguably its best chance.

Steelers Training Camp Preview: How Mike McCarthy Can Exceed These Expectations

McCarthy’s gameplan is going to help the Steelers produce a strong offense. The only possible limitation to it will be Rodgers’ age, and if he can still do the same things he was doing in his mid-30s. He never got the chance to show that under Mike Tomlin, but Steelers training camp will be the first opportunity for him to show he can still play at a high level under his former coach. Rodgers’ experience can also help with the clock management side of the game.

As far as winning a playoff game is concerned, that will also be the biggest challenge for McCarthy. The AFC is loaded with talented teams, as the Kansas City Chiefs are going to bounce back after a down year, and the Indianapolis Colts are hoping for the same after losing Daniel Jones for the final third of last season.

It will be a tough feat to accomplish, but McCarthy has all of the tools and resources available to him to pull it off for the city, and those fans will see how it all comes together when Steelers training camp begins on July 29.
