The Jets have locked down another young piece of the team today, agreeing to terms on a four-year contract extension with guard Joe Tippman. The deal is for 4 years and is worth a total of $64.4M, including $34.9M guaranteed. He is now the 14th highest-paid guard in the NFL. The front office has been quite proactive when it comes to locking down good players since Darren Mougey came to town. Last summer, it was superstars Sauce Gardner (later traded) and Garrett Wilson. This offseason, it started with Breece Hall and now includes another standout in Joe Tippman.

Joe Tippmann, Guard Agrees to New Contract Extension With New York Jets
Joe Tippman’s Jets Tenure Thus Far
The hulking offensive lineman, standing at 6’7″ and weighing 317 pounds, was drafted by the Jets out of Wisconsin in 2023. Joe Tippman was selected in the second round with the 44th overall selection. Throughout his first two seasons, Tippman played his college position of center; he started there during his last two seasons as a Badger. Tippman was solid in that spot in the NFL as well. Per PFF, he was the 17th-rated run blocker and 22nd-rated pass blocker at his position in his rookie season (out of 31 eligible players). In 2024, Tippman was the sixth-rated run blocker and 16th-rated pass blocker, an improvement.
Fast forward to 2025, and he had his position switched to guard after the preseason injury to standout guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. Thankfully for the Jets, it has been a good transition thus far. In 2025, he ranked 24th in run blocking and 20th in pass blocking. Not as impressive as center, but for him to hold his own amongst NFL talent at a new position is notable. As it was with the center position, Tippman will most likely improve, which is a good reason as to why the Jets gave him this extension.
The Stage is Set for 2027
With this extension for Joe Tippman, 10 out of the 11 starters on the offensive side of the ball are under contract for the next two seasons. The exception is quarterback Geno Smith, whose play will determine his fate. If he were to not remain the starting quarterback for 2027, the Jets now have a young, strong infrastructure for a rookie quarterback. If they want one, which they most likely will, they have the ammo to get one as well, considering their three first-round selections in 2027. The class looks to be stacked as well, as it will include names such as Texas’ Arch Manning, Oregon’s Dante Moore, potentially Notre Dame’s CJ Carr, and more.
Darren Mougey Deserves Praise
Ever since he got to New York, Darren Mougey has been determined to set the team up for the future. He has done an incredible job at doing so very quickly. He’s scanned the league for cheap trade opportunities, many of which have resulted in acquiring starters. The front office has also been abnormally great at getting extensions done, which is a more than welcomed change.
Just over a year into his tenure, the Jets now have an exciting young nucleus on offense as well as a nice mix of upside and floor on defense. The best part of it all, the team will still look to get better after the 2026 season with (as of right now) the 4th most cap space in 2027 along with their high-value draft capital.
Despite all of this, none of it matters if they don’t put it together within that rookie QB window and start winning. The Jets have been notorious lately for failing at that, with Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson both not working out during their Jets tenures. This is the best situation a rookie QB will inherit out of the three, though, so hopes are high.
Overall, this is a great move at a nice price by New York, and one that will be impactful in the present and the future.
