George Pickens’ Shrug Sparks Massive Cowboys Minicamp Drama

The latest George Pickens contract status could turn worse before the start of the 2026 season, and he’ll likely pay the price for it. Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that the Dallas Cowboys had their final day of voluntary OTAs, and while the star receiver was not in attendance due to other obligations, it’s fair to wonder what he will do. Earlier this offseason, the team franchised tagged the wideout after failing to negotiate on a contract, but drama could be brewing soon. It’s something that QB Dak Prescott or this offense can afford, but don’t be surprised if a holdout comes.

With Pickens still seeking a long-term deal, Harris and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram caught up with the receiver on whether they will see him in mandatory camp. Unfortunately for Dallas, the receiver hesitated and gave an “uhhh” response before a representative of his agency pulled him out and said he won’t be answering questions anymore. However, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer seems optimistic, but is still expected to see the wideout there.

Will He Participate?

There aren’t any guarantees on what may happen over the next few days, but the receiver won’t be happy playing on a franchise tag. After having a phenomenal 2025 season, recording 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, he has every right to be upset. The Cowboys extended RB Javonte Williams and Kicker Brandon Aubrey to new deals, and now the “heart and soul” of their offense is waiting for a contract.

If Pickens is a no-show next week, he’s subject to fines, and if he continues to miss mandatory camp, it means he will have no choice but to attend. At the same time, he could show up and stand on the sideline, which might be very telling given the circumstances of the offseason. The Cowboys are also facing another deadline.

They have until July 15 to sign the receiver, but the team could explore a trade if it’s too much of a headache. After trading star pass-rusher Micah Parsons last offseason, anything is possible, so don’t count out something happening before the 2026 season. Here are the three top teams for the outstanding offensive weapon.

Possible Fits

Los Angeles Chargers

After only adding Brenen Thompson in this year’s draft, the Los Angeles Chargers have one of the most inexperienced WR rooms in the league. Pickens would electrify this unit by bringing his versatility that Ladd McConkey would appreciate. Quentin Johnston’s future is still bright, but the Chargers can’t keep waiting around. QB Justin Herbert is a top-5 pocket-passer, but he’s getting older.

Herbert having a star receiver would bring them to the AFC Championship Game.

Indianapolis Colts

Pickens joining the Colts would most obviously change the game. The team is mulling over adding a WR3 behind Alec Pierce and Josh Downs, but what they need is another superstar. After trading away Michael Pittman Jr. to Pittsburgh, they could use an overhaul in their offensive unit. While there are free agent options, including Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen or Deebo Samuel, the Colts can’t brush off the chance to add a high-stakes weapon to fully strengthen the pass-attack for QB Daniel Jones.

Los Angeles Rams

After trading for Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie this offseason, the Los Angeles Rams aren’t afraid of adding playmakers to show they’re serious about a Super Bowl. However, they haven’t added a receiver in free agency or the trade market, but part of the feeling is that the Rams aren’t finished. The team attempted to get AJ Brown by sending Davante Adams to the Eagles, but the Rams could risk it all to get Pickens to pair with Puka Nacua and Adams.
