Jesse Minter Discusses Lamar Jackson Adapting to New Scheme

Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter has some big shoes to fill since John Harbaugh was fired earlier this year. Harbaugh built one of the most stable organizations in the NFL during his time in Baltimore, and the succession of a new head coach was among the more anticipated narratives in the league.

To Minter’s fortune, the Ravens boast one of the most talented rosters in the league, and one of the most exciting playmakers the game has to offer at quarterback, Lamar Jackson. As the Ravens coach looks to mold the organization in line with his vision, he offers insight into how he sees the franchise’s face going forward.

Ravens Coach Discusses Lamar Jackson Adapting to New Scheme

During a press conference on Wednesday, the Ravens coach was asked how Jackson is adapting to the new offensive scheme now that the new offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, has taken over.

“Yes, [Lamar Jackson]’s been incredible. He’s put in the time — first of all, he’s been here quite a bit and learned a lot. He’s just an unbelievable leader and an infectious person when he’s here. I think he’s done a great job leading the offense in the offseason — learning, being willing to try things, do different things and learn new terminology.”

Minter’s words certainly indicate that Jackson has bought into the transition to a new offensive system, rather than being a player resistant to change. In addition to complementing his individual skill set, the Ravens coach spoke about Jackson’s leadership qualities, work ethic, and receptiveness to learning new terminology, all positive indications for an offense in transition. If Jackson’s ability to set the tempo persists throughout camp, Baltimore could adapt to Doyle’s offense more quickly than many believe.

LaMar Jackson and the Offense Are Being Held to a Higher Standard

The Ravens coach went on to discuss how new offensive coordinator Doyle is holding the offense to a high standard.

“I know he’s very excited about where we’re headed. ‘Dec’ [offensive coordinator Declan Doyle] has done a great job with the offense — he holds those guys to a really high standard, which is what we want to do as a group. I appreciate him always forwarding the team message in that regard. I’m excited about where our offense is headed.”

Minter’s quotes seem to reflect the Ravens’ expectation of holding their offense to the same high standards even after a new offensive system is implemented. Rather, it looks like they will continue to establish that tough culture with Doyle that prioritizes accountability and the little things. It is a positive that Jackson seems to be buying into those expectations as the offense continues to work its way through the learning process.

Ravens Coach Delivers Strong Endorsement of Jackson

Later in the press conference, Minter was asked whether Jackson had met his expectations as the leader of the offense while helping teammates adapt to Baltimore’s new system. The Ravens coach did not hesitate when discussing the impact Jackson has had on the team throughout the offseason.

“There’s nobody I’d rather have as the quarterback of this team, this franchise. The way that [Lamar Jackson] operates, how infectious he is, how much joy he brings to the preparation and the practice field — yes, he’s been everything. You come in, and you kind of know him, but you don’t know him super well. Relationships, like I talked about at the beginning, take time, and I think we’ve built up a good trust and communication and a good relationship. [He] plus all the guys — just the way they’ve operated has been very much appreciated.”

Minter’s words express a much more expansive endorsement than just Jackson’s skill at quarterback. The Ravens coach has repeatedly said he is impressed by Jackson’s leadership and energy, among other things, and has pointed to him as a major catalyst for what is happening in the offseason for the Ravens. Having the faith of your franchise quarterback as a first-year coach establishing relationships throughout an organization is vital, and it seems Minter has already obtained all of Jackson’s.

Jackson Remains the Foundation of the Ravens

While there is still plenty of work to be done before the regular season begins, Minter’s comments paint a clear picture of where things stand. The Ravens have a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, and plenty of changes around the organization, but Jackson remains the foundation. Based on everything the Ravens coach said, the franchise quarterback has embraced that responsibility and continues to set the standard for the rest of the team.
