AJ Brown Trade Rumors: Three Teams Financially Positioned To Pursue Him

The A.J. Brown trade rumors no longer feel completely unrealistic.

Speculation surrounding Brown has continued building throughout the offseason, fueled by social media activity, Philadelphia’s long-term cap outlook, and the growing belief that NFL teams are becoming far more willing to make shocking roster moves involving star wide receivers. If the Eagles were to seriously entertain the idea, the next conversation would immediately become which franchises could realistically absorb both the trade compensation and Brown’s massive contract entering the 2026 seas

The problem with teams that would love to have Brown? Money.

Based on Over The Cap’s reported up-to-date numbers, three teams not only make sense roster-wise, but could be leading contenders in the Brown trade rumors.

A.J. Brown Trade Rumors: Three Teams Financially Positioned To Pursue

Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert Needs a Weapon

The Los Angeles Chargers could very well be at the very center of the Brown trade rumors.

The Chargers are currently in the ballpark of $45.1 million dollars in cap space, with about $40.5 Million effective cap space heading into the 2026 season. That gives head coach Jim Harbaugh and the front office real flexibility to add an offensive playmaker without totally torpedoing future cap space.

And frankly, it should make sense.

Justin Herbert is at the point in his career where the excuses have to start dwindling. The offensive line is better, the coaches are better, and the pressure is increasing. But the wide receiver corps still appears to be one play-making presence shy from really pushing this offense to winning the AFC West.

The Chargers have the money and the quarterback. Now it becomes a question of how aggressively they want to act.

The San Francisco 49ers: Everything Hinges Upon Brandon Aiyuk

The San Francisco 49ers might be the most logical team here as Brandon Aiyuk’s situation appears to be way too precarious heading into the 2026 season.

Aiyuk continues to be involved in trade talks, and with that, it’s surprising that nothing concrete has happened yet. Some of that is likely due to teams simply wanting to see if San Francisco releases him in June instead of giving up draft picks and absorbing the entire contract right now.

But if they do, all of a sudden, the 49ers may be part of the Brown trade rumors.

Financially, the 49ers are actually positioned much better than many people probably expect entering the 2026 season. According to current projections, San Francisco is sitting around roughly $45 million in available cap space, although some estimates following restructures and adjustments to veteran contracts have projected the number climbing beyond $60 million, depending on how the roster is finalized. That flexibility becomes even more important when factoring in the Aiyuk situation.

Deebo Samuel was lost after the 2024 season to the Washington Commanders, and as such, San Francisco cannot afford to casually write off losing another starting receiver on that depth chart. Kyle Shanahan’s offense needs playmakers who are capable of forcing mismatches in different spots on the field, and Aiyuk’s departure without a replacement would be transformative on that offense, particularly with the expectations the team has.

Losing Stefon Diggs Created a Hole in the Patriots’ Receiving Corps

It is hard to say which team needs receivers more than the New England Patriots. After moving on from Stefon Diggs, the Patriots still feel like a team searching for a true game-changing presence in this position.

New England is projected to have about $35.6 million in available salary cap space with a $31.6 million practical salary cap. This is quite flexible for a team attempting to reconstruct the offense around its young quarterback with a new regime being installed under head coach Mike Vrabel. This makes them a prime candidate in the Brown trade rumors.

The Patriots’ receiver room still does not have a fear factor, and no defenses have to plan too much for them at this very moment.

This is the reason New England is associated with every offensive skill player free agent report on the wire, and, likely, they will soon be mentioned in the Brown trade rumors.

The Teams To Watch Closely Moving Forward

Whether it is the Chargers trying to maximize Justin Herbert’s prime years, the Patriots searching for another offensive centerpiece after moving on from Stefon Diggs, or the 49ers preparing for the possibility of life after Brandon Aiyuk, all three franchises have both the financial flexibility and roster motivation to make a major move. Teams like this make sense to be in discussion among the Brown trade rumors.

Of course, all of this ultimately depends on whether Brown and Philadelphia can move past the growing speculation and underlying tension surrounding the situation. And if Eagles star wide receiver becomes available before the 2026 season, these teams will probably be among the first discussed in the Brown trade rumors.
