Stefon Diggs Free Agent

Commanders, Texans Fighting Over Same Free Agent

Stefon Diggs is still a free agent, but that will likely change in the coming weeks. After tearing his ACL midway through the 2024 season, Diggs signed a three-year deal with the New England Patriots with a financial structure that essentially made it a one-year deal. Functionally, Diggs had to sign a prove-it deal to show he could still play at a high level. While he isn’t an All-Pro anymore, he proved he can still be a key part of a high-octane offense. Starting and appearing in all 17 games, the wideout finished the season with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns while helping the Patriots reach the Super Bowl.

Despite his strong play, the Patriots released Stefon Diggs due to his cap hit and, at the time, pending legal issues. However, he was found not guilty of strangulation in a recent trial, which means teams should start showing more interest. Again, Diggs is not a top-five receiver in the league anymore, but he’s still a reliable pass-catching weapon in a league that doesn’t have enough good receivers to go around. While just about anyone would be willing to sign him for the right price, Bleacher Report’s Paul Kasabian believes the Washington Commanders and Houston Texans are the best fits for his services.

“The Commanders could have an in-house candidate step up as WR2, such as Antonio Williams or Luke McCaffrey,” Kasabian writes. “Diggs would give the team needed depth at the position, though, as Washington looks to rebound from a 5-12 season…”It was clear Diggs and [Houston Texans] quarterback C.J. Stroud formed a good rapport. He could return to Houston and assume WR2 duties with Nico Collins remaining the top option.”

Stefon Diggs Projected To Sign With Either Washington Commanders or Houston Texans

The Washington Commanders entered the 2025 season with Super Bowl aspirations and finished it with a top-10 pick. After reaching the NFC Championship Game with a rookie Jayden Daniels, the sky was the limit for this team. Unfortunately, they came back down to Earth in a hard way, finishing with a 5-12 record and never being in the playoff race. While injuries to Daniels played the largest role in the lost season, the rest of the roster still needs plenty of work. Terry McLaurin is a solid WR1, but the team has yet to re-sign Deebo Samuel after a solid debut season in Washington.

Perhaps the team reunites with Samuel in the coming days, but Stefon Diggs could be a considerable upgrade. Diggs and Samuel are both shells of their former selves, but Diggs has more left in his tank than the former San Francisco 49er. Washington’s season lives and dies with Daniels, and the team must find someone to make his life as easy as possible and keep him out of harm’s way. Diggs can still get open on a routine basis and can provide a quick target so Daniels can get the ball out of his hands and avoid taking hits.

Reunion In Houston

After three years in the league, the jury is still out on whether or not C.J. Stroud is a legitimate franchise quarterback. While the former second-overall pick made the Pro Bowl and guided a flawed roster to a playoff win in 2023, the past two seasons have left something to be desired. Stroud was one of the lowest-rated quarterbacks in football last year, and he finished the season with a truly disastrous performance against the New England Patriots.

Ultimately, the Texans can win with Stroud, but he’s not the type of quarterback to overcome a flawed roster. Nico Collins is a dangerous weapon, but second-round pick Jayden Higgins had an up-and-down rookie season, and Tank Dell has extensive injury concerns. Diggs developed a strong rapport with Stroud during their eight games together in 2024, and a reunion could help bring some stability to this passing attack.
