Dallas Cowboys News and Updates Heading Into the Weekend

A handful of updates have come out of the Dallas Cowboys over the past several days that fans should be aware of. From roster movement to player situations and a few notable takeaways following the draft, these are the kinds of details that start to shape the conversation as the offseason moves forward.

Dallas Cowboys News and Updates

Let’s take a look at some of the Dallas Cowboys news and updates heading into the weekend.

George Pickens is finally franchise tagged in Dallas

George Pickens was finally hit with the franchise tag by Dallas heading into the 2026 season and will be guaranteed $27.3 million. Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones made it abundantly clear during the NFL Draft that there was no plan to move on from Pickens.

“We have no intention of moving George,” Jones said during the draft. “We’re fired up about him signing his [tag], because it means he’s ready to come in here and get to work. … We have zero intention of moving [him].”

Dallas signs 6’8, 310 lb. offensive linemen

The Cowboys have signed Shiyazh Pete, a 6’8, 310 lb. offensive lineman out of the University of Kentucky  as an undrafted free agent.

Tommy Yarrish from DallasCowboys.com stated that “Pete is a huge left tackle that started in 12 games for the Wildcats in 2025 after spending the previous four seasons at New Mexico State,”

While Pete has immense size and tremendous upside, it will be no easy task for him to make the final 53 man roster.

Cowboys LB Coach “feels really good” after NFL Draft

Dallas’ linebackers coach Scotty Symons is very pleased with how the NFL Draft went for the Cowboys on the defensive front. During an interview with Patrik Walker from DallasCowboys.com, Symons had the following to say about the outcome of the NFL Draft and who he has had the chance to interact with so far.

“The three guys I’ve been able to interact with the past couple of months — Justin [Barron], Shemar [James] and [DeMarvion Overshown] — I’m really excited about the guys that we currently have and the guys that we’ve added to this room, from a culture standpoint, from a leadership standpoint, I think we have a really good foundation to build on in there,” Symons said after the Day 2 moves in Dallas.”

He is especially looking forward to working with veteran linebacker Dee Winters.

“Winters was very disruptive, an extremely athletic linebacker and the clear leader of the [TCU] defense,” Symons said. “This is a process that’s been going on for some time to try and make this happen. I’ve been a huge advocate for it. When you look at his [2025] production — his ability to run, his ability to cover, the multiplicity that he brings to the table and what it does to that room is really exciting for us. It feels really good.”

Malachi Lawrence reunites with former coach

Demeitre Brim is a the new assistant defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys. By chance, he happened to be on the defensive staff at UCF where Malachi Lawrence played. After being drafted number 23 overall in the NFL Draft, Lawrence and Brim have since reunited in Dallas. Brim has stated he is looking forward to working with Lawrence in a recent discussion with Patrik Walker on DallasCowboys.com

“For me, it’s a little bit more personal for me because I played for UCF as well. So, being able to get into the building and to tell him what the program means to us, and a lot of other former alumni that were coaching last year — we were able to build a relationship off of that. And me being a former player, and kind of a younger player, in that sense. It was good to get around him and to tell him what we expect[ed] of him [at UCF]. I spent a lot of time with him. … He means a lot to me as well.”
