George Gumbs Jr. 2026 NFL Draft Profile

 Gumbs fits the label of a “bet on the traits” prospect, a guy who made the move from wide receiver to tight end and now edge rusher. His size and collection of pass-rush moves are evidence that he could become a freak at rushing the quarterback. He has fearless energy. He has a lot to learn about playing on the defensive line; however, to be on the field outside of playing special teams. If coaches can help him develop a bull rush move, Gumbs Jr. easily advances to a high-floor, high-ceiling type of guy.

2026 NFL Draft George Gumbs Jr. Scouting Report

Strengths

  • Has 33 ⅝” arm length, allowing him to keep blockers at bay;
  • Fearless player, doesn’t give up;
  • He has shown the ability to drop and cover in zone coverage.
  • 4.66 10-yard dash, 10’1” broad jump are both above average for an edge rusher;
  • 41” vertical jump places him among the draft’s best;
  • Uses jump move/leap to get past tackles and gain an advantage on the quarterback.
  • 11 sacks in four seasons at Northern Illinois and Florida;
  • Has an unorthodox Euro-step counter on inside moves.
  • Gumbs Jr.’s move from wide receiver to tight end and then edge rusher is proof of his athleticism and versatility.
  • Great team player, will do the dirty work inside, allowing linebackers to flow and make tackles;

Weaknesses

  • Has shown vulnerability to blockers attacking his frame and driving him out of the way;
  • Energy in his pursuit is intense, often struggles to adjust to runners cutting back across the grain.
  • Despite a treasure trove of rush moves, it doesn’t seem to have a plan for how to set up tackles.
  • Lacks a bull rush set of skills;
  • Not fundamentally sound at setting the edge on the outside running game.
  • Poor habit of leading with his helmet into tackles

Bottom Line on George Gumbs Jr.

Gumbs Jr. is a project, coming on after playing his first three seasons at Northern Illinois before transferring to Florida. He entered college as a wide receiver before transitioning to tight end and then as an edge rusher. This guy has potential off the charts and for the right team able to develop his skills, they could be surprised with his production. Entering the NFL, his ceiling seems to be average, but the right coaching can change that. Many scouts project Gumbs Jr. to be an average backup and solid special teams player. The Green Bay Packers,  New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers have shown interest in taking a flyer sooner in the draft than others might anticipate.
