Chandler Rivers NFL Draft Overview
Coming out of high school, Rivers had a handful of Power 4 offers. As a two-way star at Beaumont United in Texas, Rivers picked Duke over the likes of Colorado, Houston, and Mississippi State. As a true freshman in 2022, Rivers appeared in all 13 games for the Blue Devils, starting in six. In total, his first season at the college level was solid with 52 tackles, two tackles for loss, half of a sack, one interception, six pass breakups, and even a blocked kick.
He took over as a starter in 2023, starting all 13 games. Rivers amassed 58 tackles, three tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, and a pick-six in the loss to Florida State. He kicked off the 2023 season with an 11-tackle effort in the win over Clemson, and closed it out by winning the Birmingham Bowl MVP in the win over Troy.
It was more of the same in 2024. Rivers started all 13 games for the Blue Devils and even earned the team’s defensive MVP award. That season, he added 54 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions (one pick-six), eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. His play earned him first-team All-ACC honors as well as a host of second and third-team All-American honors by various outlets.
He returned to Duke for his senior season and started 13 of the team’s 14 games. That final game was the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, where he opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft. In those 13 games, Rivers totaled 59 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, eight pass breakups, and a forced fumble. He earned second-team All-ACC honors as well.

- Can get caught peeking into the backfield
- Run defense is not ideal
Projection: Third Round
Best Fits: Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers
Bottom Line on Chandler Rivers
Starting three-plus seasons in the Power 4 is nothing to scoff at. Rivers showed that he is a legitimate defensive star while at Duke. NFL teams will love that he was such a high performer for so long.
His drawback will be the fact that he’s a tad on the smaller side. Of course, as a slot/nickel corner, that’s not the end of the world. He is physical enough to cover larger tight ends and can disrupt the point of attack to force the incompletion.
His great speed will allow him to keep up with the speedy slot receivers, and he could house an interception if he gets his hands on the ball.
Think of a better Mike Hilton. He made a career of being the physical slot corner, but was primarily a blitzer and run defender. Rivers is great as a blitzer and better in coverage. If an NFL team is looking to shore up its nickel/slot corner position, Rivers is a great fit.
