Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones showed a notable lack of effort on the game-winning touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and head coach Andy Reid commented on the play in a recent interview. Holding a four-point lead late in Monday Night Football’s matchup against the Jaguars, quarterback Trevor Lawrence took the snap at the Kansas City’s one-yard line. He immediately tripped over a lineman but got back on his feet and scrambled for a touchdown. Jones stood around and watched it happen, rather than pursue the play.
Following the game, Jones said that he thought “multiple times we had him,” which is why he didn’t play harder on the final defensive snap of the game. He later deactivated his social media following the negative backlash.
Andy Reid, however, said that this was an unacceptable excuse.
“You can’t think that the guy is down. You can’t think that,” Reid said. “You have to play the play. He knows. He’s been around this a long time. That’s really what it came down to.”
Andy Reid Doesn’t Accept Chris Jones’s Lack of Effort
The 2025 season has been a rough one for Chris Jones. After establishing himself as one of the game’s elite defensive tackles, the former second-round pick has recorded just one sack, seven tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and a 57.5 PFF grade on the season. His PFF grade is by far the lowest of his career and currently ranks 76th out of 119 eligible defensive tackles.
While this season has not treated him well, there’s a case to be made that Chris Jones is the second-best defensive tackle of his time. Since entering the league in 2016, Jones has recorded 81.5 sacks, 91 tackles-for-loss, and 201 quarterback hits while making six Pro Bowls and earning First-Team All-Pro honors on three occasions.
