Brock Purdy Set to Return When Needed the Most

The San Francisco 49ers are unbeaten through three weeks, but the challenges ahead are mounting. They will be without Nick Bosa for the rest of the season, backup quarterback Mac Jones is banged up, and the schedule only gets tougher. That’s why starting quarterback Brock Purdy’s return Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars could not come at a better time.

Brock Purdy Set to Return When Needed the Most

The 49ers welcome Purdy back after he missed the past two games with toe and shoulder injuries. With a stretch that includes two matchups against the Los Angeles Rams and a road trip to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team needs him healthy and efficient to achieve its lofty goals.

His return is even more important because Jones aggravated a PCL sprain in his left knee last week and has taken limited practice reps. Without Purdy, the 49ers might have had to start Adrian Martinez, a practice-squad call-up with no NFL experience.

The onus is on Purdy to continue playing well, especially after the team rewarded him with a contract extension this offseason. His presence should help the offense regain rhythm and build momentum for the tougher games ahead.

Purdy Returns, But McCaffrey Still Main Cog on Offense

The quarterback will not have to do it all himself against a Jaguars defense that has performed well through its first three games. As he rounds back into form, the 49ers will continue relying on running back Christian McCaffrey, who leads the team in yards from scrimmage, to provide balance to the Purdy-led passing attack.

With McCaffrey in top form and a veteran offensive line in front of him, the 49ers have the pieces to remain atop the NFC West division. Bosa’s prolonged absence is a big blow to the team’s defense, putting the spotlight on the offense to carry the team. Purdy and the rest of the 49ers have the talent and perseverance to overcome the loss and remain competitive as they vie to return to the postseason.
