Panthers Sign Pro Bowl Receiver Following NFL Draft

Veteran wide receiver Hunter Renfrow has signed a new contract with the Carolina Panthers. Renfrow, a former fifth-round pick, spent the 2024 season out of football but played with the Las Vegas Raiders from 2019 to 2023.

Hunter Renfrow, Carolina Panthers, Agree to Contract

After spending the 2024 season on the sidelines, Hunter Renfrow hopes to kickstart his career with the Carolina Panthers. The veteran joins a crowded depth chart primarily comprised of younger, inexperienced players. While first-round pick Tet McMillan is the biggest name, Renfrow will likely battle with 2024 undrafted free agent Jalen Coker for work in the slot.

Hunter Renfrow originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the then-Oakland Raiders, the Clemson product finished his inaugural campaign with 49 receptions for 605 yards and four touchdowns on 71 targets. He continued to build on this role, recording 56 receptions for 656 yards and two touchdowns in 2020.

After two promising seasons, Hunter Renfrow had the best year of his career in 2021. Setting career-highs in receptions (103), yards (1,038), and touchdowns (nine), the wide receiver made his first Pro Bowl while helping the Raiders make the playoffs. Unfortunately, the team went one-and-done with a Wild Card loss to the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.

Unfortunately, Renfrow couldn’t build on this breakout campaign. The wide receiver’s numbers plummeted under new head coach Josh McDaniels, as he recorded just 36 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns in 2022. The Raiders fired McDaniels midway through the 2023 season, but that wasn’t enough to salvage Renfrow’s career. With Jakobi Meyers effectively taking his job, the Clemson product recorded career-low numbers in receptions (25), yards (255), and touchdowns (zero).

Hunter Renfrow has played in 73 games before signing with the Panthers. While on the field, the former fifth-round pick has recorded 269 receptions for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns on 363 targets. While he has made the playoffs, he has never won a postseason game.
