He’s already broken multiple franchise records as an offensive star. By committing to this new contract, the Jets are assured to keep superstar Garrett Wilson in New York long term.

Report: NY Jets and Star Wide Receiver Agree to Long-Term Contract Extension

Veteran wide receiver Garrett Wilson has become an important part of the New York Jets. The former Ohio State Buckeye has emerged as one of the best offensive players in the league. A special talent in Columbus, Ohio, the young receiver had 2,213 yards and 23 touchdowns on 143 career catches in college. Such production led to him being selected by the Jets with the tenth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Since his first snaps in the league, Wilson has demonstrated greatness. Despite playing with three different starting quarterbacks, Wilson finished his rookie season with 1,103 yards and four touchdowns on 83 catches. That season, Wilson played with Zach Wilson, Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco, and veteran backup Mike White as his QBs. As a result, Wilson was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. Along with teammate Sauce Gardner, both the Jets top-ten picks captured Rookie of the Year on offense and defense. By all indications, these two showed they were the future.

During the 2023 season, Wilson would have his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. With Zach Wilson as his primary starter, Wilson ended the 2023 season with 1,043 yards and three touchdowns on 95 catches. In 2024, Wilson would make franchise history. With Aaron Rodgers as his starting quarterback, Wilson registered his third consecutive 1,000-yard season. With his 1,104-yard season, Wilson is only the second player in franchise history to start his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. For New York, Wilson’s extension couldn’t have come at a better time. After the extensions for star wide receivers such as Ja’Marr Chase & Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals or Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson, Wilson’s contract extension would have cost far more had New York waited. Locking Garrett Wilson into a long-term contract was essential.

Importance to the Jets

Garrett Wilson has been a great addition to New York. His route running gives the Jets a primary wide receiver any quarterback can rely on. Wilson achieving this without consistency from either his QBs, offensive coordinator, or wide receiver coach speaks volumes of his work ethic. This will be the first season Wilson has had the same wide receiver coach for back-to-back years in Shawn Jefferson. His skill set is key to unlocking New York’s full potential. To achieve this growth, the team hopes he and former college quarterback Justin Fields can reignite that chemistry. During Wilson’s college tenure, Justin Fields was his starting quarterback in 2019 & 2020.

A quality wide receiver is hard to come by. This makes it important to retain one no matter what. For the New York Jets, keeping Garrett Wilson in New Jersey was of the utmost importance. Now that he’s staying, expect the superstar to continue to grow into one of the league’s best.
