2025 NFL Draft: Cam Skattebo Scouting Report

Cam Skattebo enters the 2025 NFL Draft as one of the more intriguing running back prospects. He had a productive college career and started at Sacramento State before transferring to Arizona State where he played for two seasons. While in Tempe, Skattebo had two solid years where he played in 30 games rushing for 2499 yards and 30 touchdowns for the Sun Devils. He also had 891 yards receiving with four touchdowns to balance out his profile. The accolades and climb up the ASU ranks followed where he’d end up in a league of his own. As a senior, he ranked 9th among all active FBS and FCS running backs with 3,755 career rushing yards while his 6.2 yards per carry are 18th in that group. He also forced 225 career missed tackles on rushing plays, 4th among active FBS/FCS halfbacks, and is 4th among FBS running backs this season with 66 missed tackles forced on rushing plays, despite missing a game. His most impressive stat includes rushing for a first down or touchdown on 36.0 percent of his career carries, second among all active FBS/FCS backs (min. 300 attempts).

Skattebo wreaks havoc in the path he leaves when rushing. His compact and strong frame allows him to deliver punishing blows at the point of attack. While he lacks top-end speed, he’s more agile than given credit for and he’ll be a strong complementary back that has the potential to play three downs if needed.

Strengths

  • Powerfully built runner;
  • Plays low to the ground with a muscular frame;
  • Above average agility and lateral quickness;
  • Reaches top speed in a flash;
  • Rarely goes down on first contact;
  • Runs with great energy and passion;
  • Solid option in the passing game on screens.

Weaknesses

  • Running style may lead to durability concerns;
  • Ball security must improve at the next level;
  • Straight-line speed needs improvement;
  • Inconsistent pass blocker;
  • Doesn’t have breakaway speed.

Bottom Line on Cam Skattebo

The bottom line on Skattebo is he’s a powerful runner who can fit in almost any offense to contribute to helping his team win. Skattebo’s gritty nature will endear him to coaches,  players, and fans alike. This should ease his transition to the next level and he might start his career as a backup to an established veteran. It will remain to be seen if the ball security issues persist, and this is the biggest weakness he will have to overcome. Lastly, his agility and quickness are impressive for the stout manner in which he runs. If Skattebo is a fast learner, he could force his way into more playing time sooner rather than later.
