Player Background

Coming out of Hamilton High School in Arizona, Tyler Shough was a highly-valued prospect in the 2018 recruiting class. As a senior in high school, Shough earned a spot in the Elite 11 finals, where he showcased his passing ability. According to 247Sports, Shough was the 94th-ranked player in his recruiting class. He committed to Oregon, passing up on offers from Alabama, Michigan, and others.

Shough’s collegiate career has been a winding road. He spent two seasons at Oregon, totaling 16 passing touchdowns and six interceptions. After his sophomore year, Shough transferred to Texas Tech. Over the course of three seasons with the Red Raiders, Shough earned 13 starts. During that time, he consistently struggled with turnovers and sacks. Prior to the 2024 season, Shough transferred to Louisville. There, he finally broke out and proved why he was such a highly-touted recruit coming out of high school. In his lone season at Louisville, Shough threw for over 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns. After playing six seasons in college football, Shough declared for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Strengths

Tyler Shough is an experienced and accurate quarterback who rarely makes major mistakes. He is an accurate passer at all three levels of the field. Though he primarily threw outside the numbers at Louisville, he can hit receivers over the middle of the field as well. Shough can put touch on the ball when necessary and can layer his throws over defenders. He can bend his arm angle around pass rushers. He has decent pocket movement and can extend plays with his legs.

One of Shough’s biggest strengths is his ability to avoid mistakes. While his tape shows a few erratic throws under pressure, he rarely puts the ball in harm’s way. He rarely forces throws. In his six years of college football, Shough never threw more than six interceptions in a season. His experience in various offensive systems is a positive indicator for his transition into the NFL.

Weaknesses

When pressured, Shough often leans back rather than stepping into his throws. This can cause the ball to die at the end of deep passes. Shough has above-average arm strength, but he often fails to put zip on the ball when he should. He is not an exceptional athlete and does not scramble often. Occasionally, he gets to his reads later than he should.

NFL teams may be hesitant to draft Tyler Shough because of his age and injury history. Shough played six seasons of college football, and he’s currently 25 years old. This significantly limits his ceiling in the NFL. Shough has an extensive injury history, including injuries to his shoulder, collarbone, and leg. However, he was able to play in all 12 of Louisville’s regular season games this season.

Potential Team Fits

NFL Projection

Tyler Shough is a calculated and accurate quarterback. He projects as a high-quality backup in the NFL, with the potential to develop into a starter. His age and athletic limitations put a cap on his ceiling, but any team should be happy to have Shough on their roster. When needed, Shough will be able to step in and avoid major mistakes in the NFL. The tape shows a third-round talent who could jump into the late second round based on team need. Expect Tyler Shough to continue to rise up draft boards.
