Fantasy Quarterback Takeaways From the 2024 Season Part 2
Questions Linger for Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence
Will Trevor Lawrence ever be a QB1 again? Lawrence took a major step back in 2024, finishing the season as QB27 overall, behind Anthony Richardson and Derek Carr. Keep in mind he only played in 10 games, but his per-game average stood at 14.52 fantasy points. Taking that into account, Lawrence still finished as QB26. He finished with just 11 touchdown passes, and his 60.6 completion percentage was his lowest since his rookie season of 2021.
The big change for Lawrence is the hiring of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator, Liam Cohen, as the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ new head coach. In 2024, Cohen helped guide Baker Mayfield to 45oo yards passing, 41 touchdown passes, and an overall QB4 finish. Cohen also comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree, previously serving as Los Angeles Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2022. This is a huge addition to Lawrence’s development if he is to return to his 2022-2023 QB1 status. There is a caveat or key when deciding if you are in on Lawrence as a top-12 quarterback next season. Pre-draft rankings have Brian Thomas Jr. as the WR8 and Evan Engram as the TE10; however, Lawrence is QB21. That simply does not add up; if Lawrence is going to support two top-12 fantasy weapons, then a QB1 finish has to be in the fold for 2025.
Caleb Williams Can be Top-12 Fantasy Quarterback
Caleb Williams currently sits just outside the fantasy QB1 status in consensus rankings as the QB14. He is, however, set up to make the jump next season with the hiring of Detroit Lion‘s offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as his new head coach. Last season, Williams was a top-10 fantasy quarterback in throws from 0-1o yards. It was the downfield throws where he fell off considerably. In throws of 20 yards or more, he rated near the bottom of the league. This is where Johnson comes in. Jared Goff‘s 4,629 yards passing was second in the league, and his 8.6 yards per attempt were a career-best.
The Chicago Bears have the offensive pieces in place, DJ Moore finished 2024 as a top 16 fantasy wide receiver, and D’Andre Swift as a top 19 running back. Rookie Rome Odunze showed flashes and finished third on the Bears in targets. Finally, tight end Cole Kmet is just one year removed from his 2023 overall TE8 finish. We have to believe that Johnson brings an upgrade to all the Chicago Bears’ skill position players. The Bears will most certainly address the offensive line via draft and free agency. As stated earlier, Williams is currently ranked as the QB14, so we are not far off in our thinking that a QB1 finish is well within reach in 2025.
