Chargers, Chiefs Could Pursue 2,800-Yard Cut Candidate

The Chargers, Chiefs could pursue 2,800-yard cut candidate tight end, Gerald Everett after the 2024 season. According to a few reports, many believe the Chicago Bears may release the tight end after signing to a two-year deal this past offseason. Originally selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the South Alabama product was hoping to fill in a new team behind rookie quarterback Caleb Williams after playing a season-high snaps of 34 in week 1. However, starter Cole Kmet has been getting more looks in Chicago’s offense, especially after offensive coordinator Shane Waldron’s firing.

Everett’s production has been gradually decreasing each week and since the Bears may be heading into a rebuild, it might not make sense to pay him anymore if he isn’t getting playing time. The tight end’s contract is easy to cut despite the Bears not needing to worry about several veteran contracts. Chicago could use the money to improve their roster in this upcoming NFL draft, but as for Everett, he could be playing out his time with the Bears. Everett caught 7 passes for 30 yards through the first 8 games this season.

While he won’t be a starter anymore, it doesn’t mean he won’t find a new team. Some say new coaching staff could increase his value but that’ll be unlikely since he won’t be able to redeem himself in time. Kmet continues to show why the Bears should start getting younger in their offense and that’s what the Bears will do. Meanwhile, Everett will likely be battling to revitalize his career with a potential contender on a one-year deal to see if he has the wheels.

Reunion in Los Angeles

In 2022, the Chargers brought Everett on a two-year deal while playing the best in his career, recording 58 receptions and 555 receiving yards. Everett could easily revive his career with the Chargers with a new blueprint under Jim Harbaugh and could be a vital weapon to improve Justin Herbert’s vision. While the Chargers have several struggles in their passing game, Everett might not be the permanent fix to the woes but it would help Herbert’s chemistry to get a weapon he’s already familiar with.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles has a strong physical defense with an improved secondary but it might come down to how many plays this offense can produce to keep the wagon moving. Quentin Johnston has his moments but it isn’t equating to what rookie Ladd McConkey is doing. With Joshua Palmer and DJ Chark set to become free agents, the Chargers should make life easier for the offense moving forward if they want to continue building what they already have. Everett could an effective security blanket behind Will Dissly while being becoming their TE2.

Travis Kelce Retiring?

The Kansas City Chiefs’ luck may be running out despite winning several matchups and just one loss. Head Coach Andy Reid admits that plenty of the stars on the roster are not performing well. However, Travis Kelce is aging and realizes his time is coming to a close, so the Chiefs may be gearing up for life after him. His lack of production and targets has been a key ingredient in why Patrick Mahomes is having one of the worst seasons in recent memory.

Despite that, the Chiefs continue to have several wide receiver issues with DeAndre Hopkins, Mecole Hardman, Justin Watson and JuJu Smith-Schuster becoming free agents this upcoming offseason. They lost Rashee Rice and Marquise but only made one trade this year to address the issue. Everett might not be like a prime Travis Kelce but he could be a significant upgrade from Noah Gray.
