The Minnesota Vikings announced today that they will pick up the fifth year option for former first round pick Anthony Barr. Drafted 9th overall in 2014 out of UCLA, Barr has started all 42 games he has played in at SAM linebacker. He has totaled over 200 career tackles, 9.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and one interception in his three year career.

Seen by most as a pure pass rusher coming out of college, Barr transitioned to a stand up outside linebacker in Mike Zimmer’s defense. He has been a three down player on the strong side for the past three seasons. He has had some injury concerns through his first three seasons, and last season was his first playing all 16 games.
Barr’s play last season was far worse than what fans came to expect of him over his first two seasons. He was far more timid against the run and always seemed a step slow in coverage. Late last season head coach Mike Zimmer commented that Barr “has a tendency to coast,” and rumors have circulated he was playing through various injuries. He did however make his second Pro Bowl in as many years
In contrast, Barr’s first two years took the NFL by storm. Both fans and analysts questioned his ability to drop into coverage and make plays in the open field. Although he had some issues with missed tackles his rookie year, he proved to be a dangerous weapon for the defense. His delayed blitzes, ability to force fumbles, and pass rush capabilities commanded offenses account for number 55. His strong play culminated in 2015 with his first Pro Bowl and a Pro Football Focus grade second only to Panthers star Luke Kuechly among 4-3 outside linebackers.
The Vikings picked up Barr’s option because they believe he can return to his 2015 level of play. This is why they chose to pick up an option worth $12.3 million for a player whose performance last year was disappointing at best. The Vikings hope Barr lives up to his potential, as at his best he is an anchor for the defense and an elite talent at his position.
