While the Seattle Seahawks currently sit at 4-3 and lead the NFC West, their season has not been without its challenges, and they are actively seeking ways to elevate their performance. A few weeks ago, the Seahawks acquired defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris from Jacksonville, aiming to strengthen their defensive line. More recently, they traded away linebacker Jermone Baker and a fourth-round pick to the Titans for linebacker Ernest Jones IV, a move designed to address Seattle’s struggles at the linebacker position.
So far, the Seahawks’ defense has faced difficulties, especially in stopping the run. Seattle’s linebacker corps has been one of the team’s weakest areas, second only to the offensive line in terms of inconsistency. The loss of veteran linebackers Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks in the offseason left a significant void in both leadership and talent. Recognizing the pressing need to strengthen this area, Seattle decided it was time to bring in a proven playmaker like Jones.
Ernest Jones IV Will Make an Impact on the Seahawks’ Defense
Early Returns
Jones IV entered the NFL as a third-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 NLF Draft and made an impact during his first three seasons with the team, including playing a key role in the Rams’ Super Bowl victory over the Bengals. The Rams traded Jones to the Tennessee Titans in August following a contract dispute, and just two months later, he finds himself on the move again. Throughout his career, Jones has recorded an impressive 364 total tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, 11 quarterback hits, 5.5 sacks, 14 passes defense, one forced fumble, and three interceptions.
Get Strong
The Seahawks are counting on Jones to strengthen their run defense immediately. Known for his physicality and nose for the ball, Jones has proven to be a disruptive force against Seattle’s offense in past matchups, so the team is already familiar with his talents. In a recent press conference, Seahawks head coach Mike Mcdonald explained Jones’ arrival would enable the team to make some positional adjustments. He indicated plans to move linebacker Tyrel Dodson to the weak side, creating space for Jones to anchor the inside linebacker position.
One of the key attributes Jones brings to the Seahawks is his ability to control the gaps and make tackles in the open field, both of which have been problematic areas for Seattle’s defense this season. With Jones, the Seahawks gain a tough, downhill linebacker who can improve their run-stopping capabilities and add value in pass coverage. His discipline and experience will provide much-needed stability to the unit, while his familiarity with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson’s schemes should help him transition seamlessly. Wilson, who previously coached with McDonald on the Baltimore Ravens staff, shares a similar defensive philosophy, which should allow Jones to adapt quickly to his new environment.
Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Jones has every reason to make a strong impression in Seattle. During his introductory press conference, he expressed enthusiasm about the move and mentioned his interest in a long-term future with the team. Given his skill set and potential contributions, it seems likely that the Seahawks will want to retain him beyond this season. With Jones now part of the roster, Seattle is better positioned to shore up their defense and keep their momentum as they push toward the playoffs.
