Derrick Brown Injury

Panthers Best Player Suffers Knee Injury, Could Be Season-Ending

The Carolina Panthers season has gone from bad to worse, as star defensive tackle Derrick Brown reportedly suffered a serious knee injury during the 47-10 loss. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Brown suffered a meniscus injury that will require surgery, but his exact recovery timeline is still unknown. Brown signed a four-year, $96 million deal in the offseason to be the foundational player of Carolina’s defensive line.

Derrick Brown Suffers Potential Season-Ending Knee Injury

After trading Brian Burns to the New York Giants, Derrick Brown was easily the best player on the Carolina Panthers defense. Selected with the seventh-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Auburn product spent the past few seasons establishing himself as one of the game’s great run defenders. While his usage never required him to get after the quarterback, few players are better at stuffing the run. Last year, Brown made the first Pro Bowl of his career after he recorded 103 tackles, the most in the league for a defensive tackle.

If the Derrick Brown injury sidelined him for the entire season, it’s hard to envision a path for Carolina to win football games. After trying to improve the offense with the Diontae Johnson trade, guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis, and first-round pick Xavier Legette, the Panthers passing attack remains one of the worst in the league. Bryce Young had a disastrous 2024 debut and must improve quickly if he wants to remain the starter. The defense, meanwhile, lacks playmakers at all three levels. Jadeveon Clowney is coming off a strong year, but the former first-overall pick cannot carry Carolina’s entire defense.

Anything can happen on any given Sunday in the NFL, but the Derrick Brown injury could be the kiss of death for a team that already appeared to be on a crash course with the first-overall pick. For the sake of Panthers fans everywhere, let’s hope Brown can get back on the field in 2024.
