NFC Contender Dallas Cowboys predicted to land 39-TD quarterback and Washington Huskies prospect Michael Penix Jr. in this year’s draft. The Cowboys could prepare to use the first-round pick to select Dak Prescott’s replacement. According to a report, Dallas is preparing for the afterlife of Prescott who had yet to receive a long-term extension from the team. However, the chance is still there to make things official to keep their franchise starter for the rest of his career but that seems unlikely.
Since this is probably the last season for Prescott as a Dallas Cowboy, there have been rumors that the team is preparing to find their next quarterback. It doesn’t look to be in Prescott’s favor since the only addition they made this free agency was on defense, linebacker Eric Kendricks. The lack of offense moves other than re-signing some starters for depth, clearly could make one speculate that the Cowboys could be tanking. The upside of this is that the draft is approaching and America’s team has an opportunity to prepare for the future.
Penix notched 36 passing yards and three rushing touchdowns while leading the Huskies to a National Championship. He is quickly rising on draft boards while having an impressive showing during the NFL Combine. The 23-year-old continued to shine through at his school’s Pro Day. He notched a 4.53 on the 40-yard-dash time while impressing scouts at the combine.
However, he was never in the mentions as a first-round draft pick but now he’s garnering attention from later teams trying to find a quarterback. He will likely be the fourth quarterback in this year’s draft after Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels. According to reports, many analysts believe Penix will be selected before the end of the first round.

The Team Could Shock the League
The Dallas Cowboys could send a shockwave throughout the league on the first day of the NFL Draft. According to Adam Schefter, the Cowboys are considered a “sleeper” to select a quarterback in the first round. So it seems like if they select a quarterback this year then it means Trey Lance could be traded. There have been rumors circulating Lance that the team could trade on the second day of the NFL Draft.
Prescott is entering his contract year and if the two sides can’t agree, they’ll have a franchiser to take over. This is what the Cowboys are probably thinking in case Prescott doesn’t plan on working out a long-term deal. However, the North Dakota product is confident that a contract can get done. According to CBS Sports, there have been no offers or imminent talks this offseason.
If the Cowboys haven’t worked out a deal yet then that means they’re looking towards the draft to grab a quarterback. Penix could be the next successor for America’s team. The newfound recognition of him could intrigue a team like the Cowboys.
Other Possible Team Fits
While Penix was never considered a top quarterback prospect until now. His talent is garnering attention from what he could possess as a starter. According to a report, he already visited the Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings. A stat is that Penix became the first quarterback to throw for 4,500 yards in back-to-back seasons since Patrick Mahomes.
This shows that the teams interested are looking at him as a potential gem in this year’s draft. Wherever he lands, will likely get a prospect that could bring the offense back to life.
