Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Trey Lance is linked to NFC rival, Minnesota Vikings in a trade rumor that’s circulating around the league and has many talking. If the Vikings don’t bring back Kirk Cousins as their starter then the next solution could be trading for Lance. According to Rich Eisen, one rumor at the NFL Scouting Combine was that Minnesota may trade a mid-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys for Trey Lance. This grows more speculation that Cousin’s tenure is done.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Atlanta Falcons have made it a priority to pursue Kirk Cousins as their next starting quarterback once he becomes available in free agency. The Vikings look like they could be in a tough spot to draft a quarterback in this year’s draft with the No. 11 pick. Several reports predict that the first four picks of the draft will all be quarterbacks. So, by the time the Vikings pick, all of the top quarterbacks will most likely be gone.
This trade may come on the second day of the NFL Draft when teams make their picks. However, the Vikings may move up in a trade if they want to take the chance. It would probably require Minnesota to give up a lot to jump into the top five. It’s something that they probably would avoid so Lance could be a backup option to call up Dallas for a trade proposal.

Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Trey Lance Linked to NFC Rival Minnesota Vikings in Trade
Trey Lance May Fit Well in Minnesota
Lance spent the 2023 season as the Cowboys’ third-string quarterback after being acquired late in the preseason in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. He only played in eight games over the past three seasons with the 49ers but never touched the field as Dallas’ quarterback. The Minnesota native does have some hometown ties to the team while attending high school there before attending North Dakota State. Lance never had a real chance as a long-term starter before Brock Purdy took over his duties as QB in San Francisco.
This could be the perfect opportunity for Lance to return to his hometown and finally get the chance to be the Vikings starting quarterback. In his eight games, he notched 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 55% of his passes. Lance remains an intriguing prospect for many teams across the league, but may now move on to get the chance he wants. The Vikings could view Lance as someone who has high potential.
The Cowboys have kept Lance around for so long that he’s earning a bonus to remain with the team. Minnesota could flip that and trade with Dallas for a possible third-round pick. According to reports, Cousins is already considering moving his family to Atlanta so they may be talking. Lance could fit smoothly on a Minnesota offense that includes star receiver Justin Jefferson.
Could the Cowboys Make This Trade Happen?
There’s a 50/50 chance that the Cowboys will deal Lance due to the ongoing contract talks with Dak Prescott. However, Prescott remains confident that a deal will eventually get done. A rumor is circulating that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may have him play out his contract without an extension. Prescott has one year left on his deal and it carries a $59.4 million cap hit.
Jones said the team is going “all in,” so what seems to be holding the Cowboys from making a deal? It could be that the front office is probably waiting to see how Prescott performs under pressure next season. Prescott will become a free agent next offseason. His postseason success has probably eluded the Cowboys from talks to progress.
Lance’s time might be up for him to become a starter in Dallas. If there isn’t a deal then that probably means they may promote him to second string.
