Gus Edwards, Los Angeles Chargers, Agree to Contract
The former undrafted rookie is coming off of the best season of his career. After starting the season as the backup, Edwards quickly became the featured back after J.K. Dobbins suffered an Achilles injury in Week 1. The Rutger product was up for the challenge, finishing the season with 810 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 198 attempts. The Ravens themselves had a great season, finishing with the best record in the conference and making it all the way to the AFC Championship Game.
Gus Edwards originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. Signing with the Baltimore Ravens, the Rutgers product did not make the team out of camp and spent the early portion of the season on the practice squad. However, he earned his chance to see the field in October and never looked back. Appearing in 11 games while making six starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 718 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Ravens added Mark Ingram in 2019, relegating Edwards to a backup role. As a part of a committee, the second-year pro recorded 711 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 133 attempts. Edwards continued to share the load in 2020, recording 723 yards and six touchdowns while splitting carries with Ingram and rookie J.K. Dobbins.
Dobbins suffered a season-ending injury in August of 2021, opening the doors for Gus Edwards to show what he could do in a featured role. Unfortunately, Edwards suffered a season-ending injury of his own shortly thereafter and didn’t play a down in 2021.
The running back returned to the field in 2022, but battled some injuries in his first year back. Limited to just nine games, Edwards finished with 433 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 87 attempts.
Since signing his rookie contract, Gus Edwards has recorded 3,395 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns on 699 attempts.
