How This Tight End Could Impact the Indianapolis Colts

Tight end Kylen Granson had a breakout 2023 season for the Indianapolis Colts. Entering year four, how will he impact this offense?

The Indianapolis Colts began the 2023 season with five tight ends on the 53-man roster. Out of those five playmakers, one player stood out the most. Kylen Granson came into the league in 2021 and in his third year in 2023, led the unit with 368 receiving yards. Leading up to his third year, Granson had progressed in every season. In his rookie season, he was a bench player with 11 receptions on 15 targets for 106 yards. In his second year, he started four games and finished with 31 receptions on 40 targets for 302 yards. Each year has been a consistent progression for Granson. Therefore, it is safe to assume that he will continue to progress the more that he plays.

How This Tight End Could Impact the Indianapolis Colts

Kylen Granson Displayed Explosive Capabilities

Within new head coach Shane Steichen, Kylen Granson proved that he can thrive in this offense. He did not start every game as the Colts rotated their tight ends throughout the season. However, in the seven starts that he did have, he capped off his best season. On top of leading the tight ends in receiving yards, Granson also led them in targets (50) and receptions (30). In terms of efficiency, Granson managed a 12.3 average on yards per reception. He also managed an average of 2 yards separation distance from the nearest defender and had four receptions on six red zone targets. This would include his first and only touchdown of the season.

Kylen Granson Is at a Size Disadvantage

Granson showcased many capabilities to be explosive in this offense. The main issue for him, though, is his size and ability to block rushers. The Colts still have Mo Alie Cox, who is a better blocker than a route runner. They also have Jelani Woods, who will likely be the favorite to be the number one tight end. Woods has the physical stature of being a top-tier tight end at 6-7 and 253 pounds. After an injury-laden season last year, Woods is looking for a breakout campaign in 2024. It will be tough for Granson to try and keep up and vie for that top spot. Nonetheless, Granson has proven that he can succeed in this Shane Steichen offense. However, he needs more playing time.

Kylen Granson Can Still Be An Impact Player

Regardless of whether Granson gets the nod at the top tight end spot or not, he is one of their better options right now. Assuming the Colts do not get another weapon at tight end from free agency or the draft, Woods and Granson will be the two primary tight ends in this offense. Woods has the size and the physical capabilities with blocking and deep routes, but Granson has the elusive and athletic capabilities. At 6-1 and 240 pounds, Granson is by far the smallest tight end on this offense. However, he does not play small. His statistics speak for themselves and given his size, he is a good route runner who can make plays in open space and use his quickness to get open. The Colts will want to continue utilizing Granson’s talent in this offense.
