Gardner Minshew, Las Vegas Raiders, Agree to Contract
2023 marked the rebirth of Gardner Minshew. Originally starting the year as the primary backup to Anthony Richardson, the sixth-round pick ended up being the Colts primary starter after a series of injuries struck the rookie first-round pick. Minshew was up for the challenge, going 7-6 in 13 starts while completing 62.2% of his passes for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He narrowly missed guiding the team to the playoffs and earned his first selection to the Pro Bowl, albeit as an alternate.
Gardner Minshew originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minshew began the season second on the depth chart behind veteran Nick Foles. However, the former Super Bowl MVP suffered a collarbone injury in Week 1, opening the door for Minshew to take over as starter. He performed well, going 6-6 in his 12 starts while completing 60.6% of his passes for 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
This impressive season gave Minshew the right to enter the 2020 season as the starting quarterback. Unfortunately, he was unable to build on his promising rookie campaign. Starting in eight games while making nine appearances, the second-year quarterback completed 66.1% of his passes for 2,259 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Jacksonville ended up with the first-overall pick and used the selection on quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Following a short training camp battle, the Jaguars traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent two years backing up Jalen Hurts.
Since signing his rookie contract, Gardner Minshew has completed 891 of his 1,423 passes for 9,937 yards, 59 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions.
