2023 NFL Draft: Grant DuBose Scouting Report

After spending the past few seasons bouncing between Charlotte, Miles College, and even Walmart, Grant DuBose has decided to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft. The Alabama native made this decision following the best season of his career, as he recorded 64 receptions for 792 yards and nine touchdowns during his 12 games on the field.

After receiving minimal interest coming out of high school, Grant DuBose spent the first year of his collegiate career playing football for Miles College, a small Division-II school. While he showed some signs of life during the 2019 campaign, he ended up working at Walmart thanks to COVID-19. He eventually rejoined the college football world, transferring to Charlotte and recording 62 receptions for 892 yards and six touchdowns during the 2021 campaign.

Strengths

NFL-caliber build that knows how to use his size;

Catches anything thrown in his zip code – long wingspan lets him bring in almost anything;

Waits to show his hands until the very last second, giving defensive backs less time to react to the ball in the air;

Not afraid to take a big hit going over the middle for a target;

Productive in both seasons at Charlotte.

Weaknesses

Still very raw – that lost season shows up on his tape;

Needs to learn how to get off the line against press;

29th percentile 40-yard dash – isn’t going to beat opponents deep;

Nothing special in terms of lateral agility;

Lives his life with a cornerback on his hip – unless it’s an in-breaking route, he can’t get open.

Projection: Round 6

Bottom Line on Grant DuBose

Grant DuBose is going to need some time to develop if he’s ever going to be a regular contributor in the NFL. While the Charlotte product can do some good things once he’s in his route, he struggles to actually get there. DuBose struggles to be press coverage, and he didn’t exactly go up against the hardest slate of cornerbacks during his time in college. Until he learns how to get off the line of scrimmage, it’s going to be hard to him to do much of anything in the NFL.

However, assuming he learns a few new techniques at the professional level, it’s easy to see how DuBose can become a third or fourth option in an NFL passing attack. While he lacks the physical tools to ever turn into an ideal starter, his big build and catch radius will give him a shot to earn a role as an outside possession receiver and red zone threat. Even though he won’t get open too often, it doesn’t really matter since he’s so good at high-pointing the football, catching everything even remotely close to him, and playing the ball in a way that limits the defender’s ability to make a play.
