DeAndre Carter Signs New Contract With Las Vegas Raiders
DeAndre Carter had the most productive season of his career in terms of receiving. Normally primarily a return man (a role which he still played for the Chargers), he had to step up more than usual in the receiving game due to various injuries among the Chargers receiving corps. He finished with 46 receptions for 538 yards and three touchdowns, which was close to half of his entire career output. He thus showed more firmly this year that he has some capability beyond special teams.
Carter played college football with Sacramento State from 2011 to 2014, and during that time was First-Team All-Big Sky in 2013 and 2014, and First-Team FCS All-American in 2014. He went undrafted in 2015 and was initially signed by the Baltimore Ravens. However, he was cut before the regular season. He spent time with three more teams on their practice squads until 2018.
In 2018 after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, he finally got his chance for in-game action. However, he was waived in November and signed with the Houston Texans, where he remained until 2020. Most of his action was on special teams, with receiving reps only being occasional. He was released mid-season in 2020 by the Texans and signed by the Chicago Bears, but scarcely made an impact during his brief time there.
Carter signed with the Washington Commanders (then Football Team) in 2021, and in Week 4, he returned a kickoff 101 yards for his first career touchdown. He finished the season with 904 kick return yards. He also had his first career touchdown that year, finishing with 24 receptions for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Despite having his first remotely notable season, Washington did not keep him and he went to the Chargers in 2022.
Carter thus far in his career has a total of 104 receptions for 1,220 yards and six touchdowns, along with 3,446 total kick/punt return yards and one touchdown.
