Isaiah Spiller’s Career at Texas A&M University
Isaiah Spiller played running back for Texas A&M for three seasons. Spiller led the backfield in rushing all three seasons while on campus. The former Aggie racked up 2,993 yards at Texas A&M. He ran for 946 yards and 10 touchdowns with 5.4 yards per carry during his freshmen season. Spiller followed up this tremendous freshmen season with 1,036 yards and nine touchdowns with 5.5 yards per carry. The Aggie standout also generated 203 and 193 yards receiving respectively before entering his junior season. His last season was productive again as Spiller scampered for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns. He added another 189 yards receiving with one touchdown.
COVID Kills the Bowl Game

Spiller was unable to play in his final game in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. Texas A&M suffered a COVID-19 outbreak sidelining the Aggies and limiting Spiller from impressing in his final showing. He grabbed several accolades at A&M including SEC All-Freshman, First-Team All-SEC, and Second-Team All-SEC. The skilled running back looks to join fellow SEC back drafted in the first four rounds.

Spiller has room to grow in several aspects of his game. He is poised to become a starter in the NFL but has to become a more complete running back to become a three-down bell cow. Much like Sony Michel and Rashaad Penny, he has difficulty seeing running lanes and struggles with yards after contact. Spiller also struggles with turnovers when tacklers target the ball to create a fumble. If Spiller wishes to become a three-down impact player he will have to take care of the ball, finish runs better, and become a more complete blocker.

The former Aggie would fit nicely with teams who have questions marks at running back. He won’t be drafted as a superstar but should be valued as a potential starter in the NFL. Teams like the Texans, Dolphins, and Bills are in desperate need of consistent running back play. Other teams with uncertainty in their backfields include the Buccaneers, Giants, and New Orleans Saints.
Spiller’s durability and versatility mark him as a top running back prospect in the 2022 class. If the talented back finds the right home, he could carve out a starting role and make an impact immediately. Spiller needs work to become a three-down back, work on timing hitting the hole, and resolve fumble susceptibility, but should still be one of the first five backs taken in the draft.
