The Seattle Seahawks drafted Jarran Reed from Alabama with the 49th overall selection (round 2) of the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent his first season starting only six games, but playing in 15. He gained notoriety for his size in the middle and three passes defended that year. The next season he started 15 games, forcing a fumble and landing 45 tackles.

Reed’s best season was 2018, in which he played 78 percent of defensive snaps, gobbling up 10.5 sacks and 45 tackles in the process. Reed was thrilling that year, electrifying the middle of an otherwise average defense. The problems persisted for Seattle in the playoffs, and unfortunately for Reed, the team dissolved in the Wildcard round.

Injuries became a notable problem in 2019, for an otherwise healthy career. Reed played in only 10 games, and at times struggled out of the gate. The next season saw a slight return to normal for Reed in the middle, as he landed 6.5 sacks but only 38 tackles. The roles on Seattle’s defense began to change thereafter, and Reed became a salary cap casualty after only one season truly performing up to expectations. His playoff performance in the close of the 2020 season saw two sacks in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams; yet, his role in the regular season did not meet staff expectations.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Reed to a one-year, $7 million contract for the 2021 season. His role, however, returned to the run-stuffing object. He would play only 64 percent of defensive snaps on an average defense, grabbing 43 tackles in the process. While Reed still fulfilled his role, he was largely interchangeable on a defense that allowed nearly 2,000 yards rushing (1,999 on the season).
