Scherff’s 2021 season with the Commanders was plagued with sickness and injury. Out of 17 NFL games, Scherff only played in 11 of those games last season. Scherff missed games due to Covid-19 and an MCL sprain. When healthy, Scherff played with Pro Bowl talent. He didn’t allow a sack for the 2021 season. Scherff was selected to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time in his NFL career this past season.
Prior to the 2021 season, the Commanders placed a franchise tag on Scherff for the second consecutive year. The Commanders decided against placing a franchise tag on Scherff in 2022.
In seven seasons, Scherff has only given up 11 sacks for his entire NFL career. Unfortunately, Scherff’s NFL career has also been hampered by injuries. Due to injuries, Scherff has only played two full NFL seasons.
Scherff was drafted in the first round as the fifth overall pick of the 2015 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins. He was the first Iowa football player as a top 10 overall draft pick drafted since 2004. Scherff was unable to finish the NFL combine due to a hamstring injury but was able to finish drills missed at the combine during Iowa’s Pro Day. The Redskins drafted Scherff as an offensive tackle, but his position was moved to right guard prior to his rookie season.
Scherff played college football at the University of Iowa. Just as in the NFL, his college career was injury-hampered as well. Playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Scherff suffered a broken fibula and dislocated ankle. Despite Scherff’s history of injuries, he has excelled at his craft of being an offensive lineman. He was ranked as one of the best offensive linemen in the 2015 draft by many sports outlets. Sports Illustrated and draftscout.com both listed him as the best offensive tackle in the 2015 draft.
