Devin McCourty Signs Contract With New England Patriots

Longtime NFL veteran safety Devin McCourty signed a new contract with the New England Patriots. McCourty, a three-time Super Bowl champion, spent the entirety of his career with the New England Patriots.

Despite 2021 marking his 12th year in the NFL, McCourty still proved to be one of the better safeties in the league. Starting and appearing in all 17 games, the two-time Pro Bowl selection finished the season with three interceptions, 10 passes defended, and 60 tackles while helping to take away the deep part of the field in New England’s man-heavy scheme. He also ended the year with a 75.5 PFF grade, good for the 14th-best mark among safeties.

McCourty originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. Selected by the New England Patriots, the Rutgers product actually began his career at cornerback. McCourty thrived as a rookie, showing a real nose for the ball while recording seven interceptions, 17 passes defended, two forced fumbles, and one sack. This effort earned his a second-place finish in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, along with a spot on the Pro Bowl roster and a Second-Team All-Pro nomination.

However, McCourty couldn’t duplicate that success in 2011 or in 2012. Ranked as one of the worst cornerbacks in football over that two-year stretch, the Patriots eventually moved him to safety following the acquisition of Aqib Talib. That decision worked wonders for McCourty, as he immediately turned into one of the best free safeties in football. His ability to solidify the deep part of the field played a large part in New England winning three Super Bowls from 2014 to 2018.

Throughout the course of his career, Devin McCourty has played in 188 games, recording 31 interceptions, two pick-sixes, 102 passes defended, 11 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, three sacks, 900 tackles, 20 tackles-for-loss, and four quarterback hits.
