Dallas Cowboys Potential Free Agent Moves

Dallas Cowboys Potential Free Agent Moves: Read about some potential free agency moves during the 2022 Off-Season.
Cowboys Potential Free Agent

Dallas Cowboys potential free agent moves include two key pieces on the offensive side of the ball. The Cowboys should take advantage of this opportunity to move on from Connor Williams and Michael Gallup. Neither player has been as productive as hoped due to injuries or flat-out poor play. With Dak Prescott’s massive contract last season the Cowboys need to trim some fat and invest in younger players.

Cowboys Potential Free Agent Moves: Connor Williams, Michael Gallup

Connor Williams

Connor Williams could be on the chopping block in the 2022 off-season. The offensive tackle has struggled over the last few seasons. Williams has not met expectations as a second-round pick. He has not been terrible, however when compared to other players on the Cowboys offensive line, he has fallen short. Williams was drafted with the expectation to shine similarly to Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, Zach Martin, and La’el Collins. He was penalized 14 times during the regular season and had two more devastating penalties in the Wild Card loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Williams has not played terribly. However, he committed numerous penalties in key situations. The struggling offensive tackle has also not been the Pro Bowl staple like his counterparts on the offensive line. With the penalties in crucial situations and mediocre play, Williams and Dallas would both benefit from a change in scenery for the former second-round pick.

Michael Gallup

Michael Gallup has suffered unfortunate injuries this last season in Dallas. Gallup suffered a calf injury in week one. He spent a big chunk of the season on the Injured Reserve (IR) list with the calf injury. Gallup was able to return to the field only to suffer an ACL tear in Week 17. He was able to amass over 400 yards and two touchdowns with his limited time on the field in 2021.

Gallup has been a good complimentary wide receiver to Amari Cooper. The Dallas Cowboys drafted CeeDee Lamb in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Since then, Lamb has been one of the premiere young wide receivers in the NFL. Other players that have broken out and been productive for Dallas include Dalton Shultz and Tony Pollard.

With all these great skill players there are simply too many mouths to feed in Dallas. The Cowboys have a tremendously skilled group on the offensive side of the ball. Gallup would be better suited on a team that looking for pass catchers. Gallup moving on would be in the best interest of both the Cowboys and Michael Gallup.

Potential Addition

Orlando Brown Jr. finished the season with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs turned their offensive line around boasting one of the best units in the NFL. Drafting Creed Humphries and trading for Brown Jr. both paid off as Kansas City was dominant upfront down the stretch. The former Sooner is likely to get a big contract extension from Kansas City, but without Williams, the Cowboys would be in the market for another offensive lineman. Brown Jr. would make a great addition next to Smith, Collins, and Martin.

If Dallas could steal Brown Jr. away from Kansas City, the Cowboys could sure up their offensive line with a young and talented player. After the Chiefs traded for Brown Jr. the offensive line gelled. This seems theoretically improbable, yet also a home run free agent signing.

The Cowboys have some tough decisions coming up in the 2022 off-season. The Cowboys will have to let go of some key pieces and decide to test the free agency waters or try to build through the draft. With the history of current management, building from the draft is more likely despite big names entering the free agency pool.
