Los Angeles Rams running back, Cam Akers, has suffered a torn Achilles while working out away from the team facility. The injury reportedly happened yesterday, and Akers underwent testing immediately. This comes as a significant blow to the Rams as training camp is only a week away. Akers was expected to be the feature back of the team’s offense this season, so now the Rams will likely have to bring in a veteran to help fill the void he left behind. As of this writing, the Rams running back depth chart now consists of Darrell Henderson, Xavier Jones, Raymond Calais and Otis Anderson.

Cam Akers Raptures His Achilles

There is definitely some veteran help out there if that is the route the Rams decide to go. Keep an eye out for guys like Adrian Peterson, Le’Veon Bell, Lamar Miller, Todd Gurley and Duke Johnson. It is hard to believe someone like Gurley would return to the Rams, but running back roster spots are few and far between in today’s NFL.

Cam Akers was the fourth running back selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was drafted in the second round with the 52nd overall pick. During the 2020 NFL season, Akers appeared in 13 games as a rookie for the Rams. In those 13 games, he had 145 rushes for 625 yards and two touchdowns. Akers also recorded 11 receptions for 123 yards and one touchdown.

During his time in college at Florida State, Akers accumulated 2875 yards and 27 touchdowns on 586 carries in three seasons. The Rams drafted Akers with the intention of having him become the featured running back for their offense. Now with this devastating Achilles injury, it is unknown what the future holds for him. Without a doubt, the road to recovery will be a trying one for this young athlete. Thankfully, youth is on his side.
