Chandon Herring 2021 NFL Draft Profile
Blocking at right guard for the prolific 2020 BYU offense, Chandon Herring enters the draft looking to assist another vertical offense. While he might not be the most carved-out prospect, his size and pedigree increase his positional stock. A two-star recruit out of Perry High School in Gilbert, AZ, Herring improved each season with the Cougars. His stock only rose when his teammate, Zach Wilson, posted among the most prolific passing seasons in recent college history. Playing for a BYU team that nearly pulled off an undefeated season, Herring certainly showed the ability to play football with a purpose. His team won a lot of games during the 2020 season and did a good job to keep Wilson’s pocket clean. After all, the ability to keep a big-time quarterback protected certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.
Still, the redshirt-senior isn’t without his downsides. Herring doesn’t pack much of a punch as a blocker and has some notable technical flaws. Further, he’s one of the oldest players in this year’s draft, as he delayed the start of his college career by two years. Regardless, he’s got a big frame and showed plentiful resilience on the BYU offensive line. Herring is likely to be a late-round pick, but he’s got some interesting upside. After a good performance at his pro day this spring, he could also find himself rising on the boards of teams around the league.
Strengths
- Heady player who uses chip blocks well to help in the running game;
- Recovers well when knocked off his spot or off-balance;
- Really quick off the snap;
- Always looks for ways to assist other blockers while never missing assignments;
- Picks up blockers quite well in the second level;
- Really good size for the guard position;
- While not phenomenal, it’s rare to see him lose in pass blocks.
Weaknesses
- Loses ground when pass blocking against bigger defensive tackles;
- Has sub-average athleticism;
- Gets pushed back way too much as a pass blocker;
- Footwork leaves something to be desired;
- Despite initial quickness, struggles to set up a good frame;
- Doesn’t pack much of a punch as a run blocker.

Bottom Line on Chandon Herring
While not among the top targets in this class of guards, Chandon Herring does provide some intrigue as a prospect. Given his massive frame and success blocking for the 2020 BYU Cougars, he seems worthy of a late-round flier. However, if he falls out of the top-256 picks, he should have a good deal of options as a free agent. From there, it’s going to be about getting with the right team and the right offensive line coach. Herring seems like someone who could benefit from some refinement in order to excel at the next level. As a prospect, his technical details have their flaws, but it seems like something that’s worthy of giving some correction. He might never be a starter, but he could certainly be an appreciable depth player in the future.
